Key to the splendor of this edition are 100 illustrations by the great Gustave Dore, the dean of nineteenth-century illustrators. Dore is best known for his imaginative and fantastic wood-engraved book illustrations. He displayed his natural talent for drawing at an early age and in 1847 was taken to Paris by his parents. There Dore studied at the Lycee Charlemagne, worked as an illustrator, and spent his spare time visiting the Louvre and the print department of the Bibliotheque Nationale to study the techniques of past masters. Dore had the idea of publishing illustrated editions of literary masterpieces in folio format. In 1854, Dore began a series of illustrated classics that included not only the Bible, but also Dante's Inferno, Cervantes's Don Quixote and John Milton's Paradise Lost. These were met with resounding acclaim. Dore was an extraordinary artist who worked with incredible speed, drawing directly on the woodblock, which was then cut by a staff of engravers specially trained by him. His extraordinary work adds to the glory of this powerful volume.
