In 1998 a group of Tennessee schoolchildren embarked on a class project that would change their lives and impact those of countless others around the world. Responding to a history lesson about the Holocaust the students began collecting 11 million paper clips (a Norwegian symbol of Nazi resistance) to commemorate each of the lives lost in the concentration camps. As news of the Paper Clip Project spread through the Internet the children found themselves aided by total strangers in their effort to build a permanent memorial to tolerance and diversity in their schoolyard. Mona Lynch, Associate Professor in the Criminology, Law & Society Department at the University of California, Irvine, visits with
her book Sunbelt Justice: Arizona and the Transformation of American Punishment. In the late twentieth century,
the United States experienced an incarceration explosion. Over the course of twenty years, the imprisonment rate quadrupled,
and today more than 1.5 million people are held in state and federal prisons. Arizona’s Department of Corrections came of age
just as this shift toward prison warehousing began, and soon led the pack in using punitive incarceration in response to crime.
Sunbelt Justice looks at the development of Arizona’s punishment politics, policies, and practices, and brings to light just

Renowned nature photographer and wildlife biologist Paul Nicklen, whose work has been published in magazines around the world, including ten articles for National Geographic, presents his book Polar Obsession. The Arctic is in Nicklen’s blood. Born and raised on Baffin Island, Nunavut, he grew up in one of the only non-Inuit families in a tiny native settlement amid the ice fields, floes, and frigid seas of Northern Canada. THE ART OF MEDITATION, THE PATH TO PEACE      7PM

Meditation teacher Kadam Michelle Gauthier of Clear Light Buddhist Center visits to discuss Transform
Your Life by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, which offers clear, simple advice for improving your relationships and
finding meaning. She also discusses the CD Meditations for Relaxation -- three guided meditations to
help relax body and mind. Kadam Michelle is a senior meditation teacher in the New Kadampa Tradition, who
has been studying and practicing Buddhist meditation for fifteen years under the guidance of the venerable
Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.

 

University of Utah writing professor Maximilian Werner visits with Black River Dreams, his collection of literary fly fishing essays that explores the intersection between past and present, spirit and body, water and land, ghosts and dreams. Werner is the winner of the 2008 Utah Arts Council's Original Writing Award for Nonfiction. Also tonight, Margaret Erhart, a river and hiking guide in the Grand Canyon, presents her novel, The Butterflies of the Grand Canyon. When Jane Merkle arrives in the tiny town of Flagstaff with her much older husband on a summer day in 1951, she has no idea that her life is about to change forever. But over a summer spent with her sister-in-law, Dotty, and Dotty’s lepidopterist husband in a village perched on the rim of the Grand Canyon, Jane discovers her ability with a butterfly net and her attraction to a handsome young ranger. Meanwhile, an unidentified skeleton is found on the premises of one of the village’s most cantankerous citizens. With the help -- and hindrance -- of a colorful cast of historical characters, the murder mystery that has haunted the town for years is solved. Erhart, a teacher of creative writing on the Navajo and Hopi reservations, has published essays in the New York Times and Christian Science Monitor, and her commentaries have appeared on National Public Radio.

Kids Storytime

The Lost Boys of Sudan were orphaned when government troops attacked villages in southern Sudan killing many of the inhabitants.  The younger boys survived in large numbers because they were away tending herds or were able to escape into the nearby jungles.

Orphaned and with no support, the boys made epic journeys lasting years across the borders to international relief camps in Ethiopia and Kenya evading thirst, starvation, wild animals, insects, disease, and one of the most bloody wars of the 20th century.

The United Stated accepted 3,800 refuges for immigration and many settled in Arizona.  Birth dates are not traditionally recorded in Southern Sudan, so many of the Lost Boys were given the birth date of January 1 when aid workers interviewed them in the 1990s.

Since 2005, Changing Hands has celebrated the Lost Boys with an annual Birthday Celebration.  Yearly, our communities come together to discuss current events, happenings in the boys' lives and enjoy birthday treats. 

 The AZ Lost Boys will be on hand with their ceramic cows.  The Lost Boys make cows out of clay then fire and glaze them to make a beautiful sculptures. All of the profits from the Cow Project go into a scholarship fund that is distributed directly to the Arizona Lost Boys and Girls every school semester.

Jeannette Walls’ memoir The Glass Castle was “nothing short of spectacular” (Entertainment Weekly). Now, in Half Broke Horses, she brings us the story of her grandmother, told in a first-person voice that is authentic, irresistible, and triumphant. “Those old cows knew trouble was coming before we did.” So begins the story of Lily Casey Smith, Jeannette Walls's no nonsense, resourceful, and spectacularly compelling grandmother. Temple University professor Bryant Simon visits with his book, Everything but the Coffee: Learning About America from Starbucks, which looks beyond baristas, movie cameos, and Paul McCartney CDs to understand what Starbucks can tell us about America. Simon visited hundreds of Starbucks around the world to ask: Why did Starbucks take hold so quickly with consumers? What did it seem to provide beyond a decent cup of coffee? Why at the moment of Starbucks’ profit-generating peak did the company lose its way, leaving observers baffled about how it might regain its customers and cultural significance? Everything but the Coffee probes the company’s psychological, emotional, political, and sociological power to discover how Starbucks’ explosive success and rapid deflation exemplify American culture at this historical moment. Most importantly, it shows that Starbucks speaks to a deeply felt American need for predictability and class standing, community and authenticity, revealing that Starbucks’ appeal lies not in the product it sells but in the easily consumed identity it offers.

In her groundbreaking bestseller, Animals in Translation, Temple Grandin drew on her own experience with autism as well as her experience as an animal scientist to deliver extraordinary insights into how animals think, act, and feel. Tonight, she visits to build on those insights and show us how to give our animals the best and happiest life -- on their terms, not ours -- with Animals Make Us Human: Creating the Best Life for Animals. Knowing what causes animals physical pain is usually easy, but pinpointing emotional distress is much harder. Grandin identifies the core emotional needs of animals and explains how to fulfill the specific needs of dogs and cats, horses, farm animals, zoo animals, and even wildlife. Whether it’s how to make the healthiest environment for the dog you must leave alone most of the day, how to keep pigs from being bored, or how to know if the lion pacing in the zoo is miserable or just exercising, Grandin teaches us to challenge our assumptions about animal contentment and honor our bond with our fellow creatures.

Sandra Mitchell, a professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh, visits with her book Unsimple Truths: Science, Complexity, and Policy. Birds form coherent patterns when they flock, major depressive disorder has some sort of genetic basis, the global climate is changing, but we can’t predict exactly how fast. What do these diverse things have in common? They are all complex, being made up of many parts interacting to generate the feature we attempt to explain. Mitchell explores these and other examples and argues that contemporary scientific explanation requires us to shift out of an old philosophical framework to accommodate emergence, dynamic causality and deep uncertainty. How we think about the world, how we investigate the world and how we act in the world must be revised to make sense of complexity.

In 1998 Mario Rocha was convicted of murder on the basis of one questionable identification and not a shred of
physical evidence. He was 16 years old at the time of his arrest, but was tried as an adult and sentenced to life in
prison. While spending over two years in juvenile hall awaiting trial, Mario joined a writing program and discovered his
talent for writing. Today his stories, plays and poems are published and performed in prisons throughout the country.
This film interweaves Mario’s story as an inmate in one of California’s toughest maximum-security prisons with the
efforts of an unlikely group of people who have come together to win his freedom.
