What happens when a person loses hope but still wants to make art? Poet Kate Greenstreet would like her new collection, The Last 4 Things (which includes a DVD of two short films), to be read as if it were a found object, like something left on an empty bus seat -- not a document addressing the question “Why do we make art?” but acknowledging the fact that we do make art, despite conditions, whether it’s a photograph or a simple stick drawing in the dirt. COMMUNITY MOVIE NIGHT: PAPER CLIPS      6PM

In 1998 a group of Tennessee schoolchildren embarked on a class project that would change their lives and impact those of countless others around the world. Responding to a history lesson about the Holocaust the students began collecting 11 million paper clips (a Norwegian symbol of Nazi resistance) to commemorate each of the lives lost in the concentration camps. As news of the Paper Clip Project spread through the Internet the children found themselves aided by total strangers in their effort to build a permanent memorial to tolerance and diversity in their schoolyard. Mona Lynch, Associate Professor in the Criminology, Law & Society Department at the University of California, Irvine, visits with
her book Sunbelt Justice: Arizona and the Transformation of American Punishment. In the late twentieth century,
the United States experienced an incarceration explosion. Over the course of twenty years, the imprisonment rate quadrupled,
and today more than 1.5 million people are held in state and federal prisons. Arizona’s Department of Corrections came of age
just as this shift toward prison warehousing began, and soon led the pack in using punitive incarceration in response to crime.
Sunbelt Justice looks at the development of Arizona’s punishment politics, policies, and practices, and brings to light just

Renowned nature photographer and wildlife biologist Paul Nicklen, whose work has been published in magazines around the world, including ten articles for National Geographic, presents his book Polar Obsession. She will discuss the actor’s process in preparing to perform Shakespeare and refer to personal interviews with Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh, Derek Jacobi, Stacy Keach, and other hallmark classical actors.
