JONATHAN R. COLE: THE GREAT AMERICAN UNIVERSITY 7PM Dr. Jonathan R. Cole, former provost of Columbia University, visits with his book, The Great American University: Its Rise to Prominence, Its Indispensible National Role, and Why It Must be Protected. From the development of technologies like the laser, the global positioning system, the MRI, radar, and even Viagra, to predicting weather patterns, American research universities are one of our most vital sources of economic growth and social welfare. They have flourished because of a system that has invested public tax dollars in their work and, more importantly, granted substantial autonomy to funding agencies and the universities. This system, Cole argues, is now under attack, the university’s preeminence endangered by the Patriot Act and other policies. This revelatory and alarming book will show how this vital institution is at risk, and why a threat to the university is a threat to the health and wealth of our nation.

[Please note: In-person or phone orders only.] Take what you thought was “rock and roll excess,” double it, and you still wouldn't be anywhere near the dizzying life of Ozzy Osbourne. Born into a life so poor that the entire family slept in one room, music was his salvation, and his band, Black Sabbath, went on to change the musical landscape forever. The inevitable sex and drugs came along with the rock and roll lifestyle, and Ozzy soon fell into an epic relationship with booze and chemicals. The stories of Ozzy’s days on the road are legendary -- biting the head off of a live bat, the tragic plane crash that took the life of his best friend and writing partner Randy Rhoads -- but few know about the real heartbreak he suffered during those days of hard living. I Am Ozzy (Grand Central, $26.99) is the heavy metal pioneer’s unbelievable story told, for the first time, in Ozzy’s hilarious, witty, and inimitable voice. In the end it was love that saved him: the love of his wife Sharon and kids Aimee, Kelly, and Jack. Library Journal raves with a starred review, “Holding back nothing, this is horrific, fascinating, and often hilarious . . . the voice here is pure Ozzy . . . one of the most amazing rock autobiographies of all time.” Book vouchers (required to attend signing) are available only at Changing Hands Bookstore. 480.730.0205. Voucher is good for one copy of I Am Ozzy, redeemable on February 20 at the signing (through March 31, 2010). Voucher is like cash and will not be refunded if lost, stolen, or unused. Due to time constraints, Ozzy will not pause for photos, personalize books or sign memorabilia (shirts, posters, CDs, guitars, etc.). Show your ticket stub next door at Hoodlums Music for your chance to win one of two OZZY PRIZE PACKS and one of 20 gift cards from Hoodlums and Mac's Broiler & Tap.

CHRIS CLEAVE: LITTLE BEE 2PM Novelist and Guardian columnist Chris Cleave, author of the international bestseller Incendiary, visits with his latest, Little Bee, a haunting novel about the tenuous friendship that blooms between two disparate strangers -- one an illegal Nigerian refugee, the other a recent widow from suburban London. According to the Washington Post, “Little Bee will blow you away. [Cleave] has carved two indelible characters whose choices in even the most straitened circumstances permit them dignity -- if they are willing to sacrifice for it. Little Bee is the best kind of political novel: You’re almost entirely unaware of its politics because the book doesn’t deal in abstractions but in human beings.”

Over the summer, adventures do seem to find her, whether it’s a thrilling ride in a hot-air balloon, the appearances of a slew of possible fathers, or a weird new friendship with a preacher and psychic wannabe. Chelsea Handler, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea, visits with her new book, Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang. Life doesn’t get more hilarious than when Handler takes aim with her irreverent wit. Who else would send all-staff emails to smoke out the dumbest people on her own late night talk show (E!’s Chelsea Lately)? Now, in this new collection of original essays, Handler delivers one laugh-out-loud moment after another as she sets her sights on the ridiculous side of childhood, adulthood, and daughterhood. Family moments are fair game, whether it’s writing a report on Reaganomics to earn a Cabbage Patch doll, or teaching her father social graces by ordering him to stay indoors. Chelsea also performs at the Dodge Theater tonight at 8. PLEASE NOTE: This is a booksigning only. From Walmart drag parties, renegade Homemakers’ Clubs, and online chat rooms, Out in the Country offers an unprecedented contemporary account of the lives of today’s rural queer youth. Mary Gray, Assistant Professor of Communication and Culture at Indiana University at Bloomington, illustrates that against a backdrop of an increasingly impoverished and privatized rural America, LGBT youth and their allies visibly and vibrantly work the boundaries of the public spaces available to them. Out in the Country is a timely and groundbreaking ethnographic study of sexuality and gender, new media, youth culture, and the meaning of identity and social movements in a digital age.

In The Imperfect Diamond, Lowenfish tells the stories of the players and their opponents -- the powerful team owners. He discusses the Players League Rebellion of 1890, the rise and fall of David Fultz and the Baseball Players Fraternity, the iron-fisted regime of Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis, the founding of the Baseball Players Association, the midseason strike of 1981, the 1994-95 strike that wiped out the World Series, and much more.

They act out and risk repeating this destructive cycle with their own children. Drawing from his own clinical and personal experiences, Krehbiel provides tools for untangling the past through self-reflection, recognition, and grieving. More info: www.krehbielcounseling.com.

As a pastor working in a neighborhood with the highest concentration of murderous gang activity in Los Angeles, Gregory Boyle created an organization to provide jobs, training, and encouragement so that young people could work together and learn the mutual respect that comes from collaboration. Tattoos on the Heart is a breathtaking series of parables distilled from his twenty years in the barrio. Arranged by theme and filled with sparkling humor and glowing generosity, these essays offer a stirring look at how full our lives could be if we could find the joy in loving others and in being loved unconditionally. Inspired by faith but applicable to anyone trying to be good, these personal, unflinching stories are full of surprising revelations and observations of the community in which Boyle works and of the many lives he has helped save. Tattoos on the Heart reminds us that no life is less valuable than another. Father Gregory Boyle has received California Peace Prize, the “Humanitarian of the Year” Award from Bon Appétit, the Caring Institute’s 2007 Most Caring People Award; and received the 2008 Civic Medal of Honor from the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. Roderick Townley visits with The Blue Shoe: A Tale of Thievery, Villainy, Sorcery, and Shoes, with drawings by Mary GrandPre, who illustrated the Harry Potter series. Hap Barlo sits in a cell, wondering how it had all gone so wrong. The blue shoe was ruined, the girl he'd been trying to help was missing, and he’d been branded a thief—again! On the bright side, now he might be able to rescue his father, who had been banished last year. No one has ever returned from Xexnax, the notorious mountain prison, so maybe Hap is a tad optimistic. Then again, perhaps a dreamer, a doer, and a thief is just the kind of boy who could challenge this mountain and win! Rebecca Skloot visits with her New York Times bestseller The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Known to scientists as HeLa, Henrietta Lacks was a poor tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors. Yet, her cells—taken without her knowledge—became one of the most important tools in medicine. The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though Lacks has been dead for more than sixty years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine, uncovering the secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb's effects. They led to important advances like in-vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping, and launched a multimillion-dollar industry. Yet Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an unmarked grave, and her family can't even afford health insurance. Skloot documents the extraordinary legacy of a virtually unknown woman: from the "colored" ward of Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1950s to stark white laboratories with freezers full of HeLa cells; from Henrietta's dying hometown of Clover, Virginia to East Baltimore today, where her descendants live. As Skloot shows, the story of the Lacks family is inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of. SEATING begins one hour before the event. Lettered tickets (free with book purchase) will be called alphabetically to fill seats and will also be used to form the booksigning line. Udall tells a darkly humorous story of a deeply faithful man who, crippled by grief and the demands of work and family, becomes entangled in an affair that threatens to destroy his family’s future. Veteran journalist and PBS NewsHour correspondent Jeffrey Kaye visits with his book Moving Millions: How Coyote Capitalism Fuels Global Immigration. Coyote capitalism is the notion—practiced by many businesses and governments—that people are supplies to be shifted around to meet demand. Workers are pushed out, pulled in, and put on the line without consideration of the consequences for economies, communities, or individuals. Moving Millions knocks down myths about why immigrants come to America, and finds surprising connections between globalization, economic growth and the convoluted immigration debates taking place in America and other industrialized countries. Kaye exposes the dark side of globalization and the complicity of businesses and governments to benefit from the migration of millions of workers. | ||

Stinkweeds Music will host an hour of discussion Justin is in town from San Diego, on tour and promoting his new book, From the Graveyard of the Arousal Industry. An icon of the West Coast noise and punk scene, Justin Pearson managed to arrive at adulthood by outsmarting skinheads and dodging equally threatening violence at home. Once there, the struggle continued, with Pearson getting beat up on Jerry Springer and, on more than one occasion, chased out of town by ferociously angry audiences. John Waters has offered advance praise for the book: “Showbiz never looked so violent yet cheery, chaotic yet level-headed. Justin Pearson is a lovely lunatic who writes with kindness even if he’s describing being in the middle of an on-stage brawl. He may pick the wrong girl and never be able to escape the mayhem in his personal life but he still seems kind of perfect . . . in a twisted way.” Link to a video preview of the book: http://www.vimeo.com/9429714 About the author: Vocalist, lyricist, and bassist Justin Pearson’s bands, past and present, include The Locust, All Leather, Some Girls, Holy Molar, Swing Kids, The Crimson Curse, Head Wound City, Ground Unicorn Horn, and Struggle. He runs the independent record label Three One G. Traveling worldwide with his bands, Pearson has encountered many strange things in his time. He lives in San Diego.
