5th Annual Lost Boys of Sudan Birthday Party
01/07/2010 7:00 pm
The Lost Boys of Sudan were orphaned when government troops attacked villages in southern Sudan killing many of the inhabitants. The younger boys survived in large numbers because they were away tending herds or were able to escape into the nearby jungles. ![]() Orphaned and with no support, the boys made epic journeys lasting years across the borders to international relief camps in Ethiopia and Kenya evading thirst, starvation, wild animals, insects, disease, and one of the most bloody wars of the 20th century. The United Stated accepted 3,800 refuges for immigration and many settled in Arizona. Birth dates are not traditionally recorded in Southern Sudan, so many of the Lost Boys were given the birth date of January 1 when aid workers interviewed them in the 1990s. Since 2005, Changing Hands has celebrated the Lost Boys with an annual Birthday Celebration. Yearly, our communities come together to discuss current events, happenings in the boys' lives and enjoy birthday treats. |
