Eric Shonkwiler presents his debut novel Above All Men. Joining him is Patrick Michael Finn, founder and coordinator of the creative writing program at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, with his short story collection From the Darkness Right Under Our Feet.
In Shonkwiler's Above All Men
, America is slowly collapsing. Crops are drying up, oil is running out, and people are fleeing cities for the countryside — worsening the drought and opening the land to crime. Amid the decay and strife, war veteran David Parrish fights to keep his family and farm together. However, the local murder of a child opens old wounds, forcing him to confront his own nature on a hunt through dust storms and crumbling towns for the killer.
In Finn's From the Darkness Right Under Our Feet
, the themes of brutality, defeat, loneliness, and comic absurdity haunt each of his eight stories. His assembly of characters are confronted by life-changing crises that force them to make impossible choices. Some redeem their dignity, while others are crushed by loss and spiritual destruction.
