Margulis is known for her work in theoretical biology through her theory on the origin of eukaryotic organelles and her contributions to endosymbiotic theory. Margulis is the author of more than 130 scientific articles and 10 books including Luminous Fish: Tales of Science and Love, Mind, Life, and Universe: Conversations with Great Scientists of Our Time, and Dazzle Gradually: Reflections on the Nature of Nature. A leading proponent of Gaia theory, Margulis is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a winner of the Presidential Medal of Science and the Darwin-Wallace Medal.
