Gary L. Stuart | Innocent Until Interrogated: The True Story of the Buddhist Temple Massacres and the Tucson Four
10/05/2010 7:00 pm
| Meet Gary L. Stuart 7pm Tuesday, October 5 Gary L. Stuart visits with his book Innocent Until Interrogated: The True Story of the Buddhist Temple Massacre and the Tucson Four. On a sweltering August morning in 1991, a woman walked into a Buddhist temple near Phoenix and discovered nine members—six of them monks committed to lives of non-violence—dead, shot execution style. The manhunt that followed turned up nothing until a tip from a psychiatric patient led to the arrest of five suspects. One by one, under intense interrogation, they confessed. One was freed after providing an alibi, but the remaining suspects—dubbed "The Tucson Four"—remained in custody even though no physical evidence linked them to the crime. Months later, two teenage boys confessed and the group was freed. But why were confessions forced out of innocent suspects? How did legal authorities build a case without evidence? How did so much go so wrong? |
