Cynthia Woodty, who grew up on the Navajo reservation in northern Arizona, visits with her independently published debut novel, Summer of Sunflowers. Woodty tells the story of 16-year-old Shannon Scott, who returns to the reservation to spend a summer with her grandmother, expecting a peaceful vacation and a break from her hectic city life in L.A. What she encounters instead is a dramatic summer of shocking and unexpected events -- a surprise visit from strangers, the murder of a local Navajo man, a new love interest, and a flood of bad memories she thought she’d tucked away for good.
