Written 60 years ago, but still important and relevant today, The Wisdom of Insecurity focuses on the idea of removing distractions and insecurities in your life and focusing on the present. Watts has an unique way of discussing this classic Buddhist philosophy. He’s an expert explorer of the self and a genius of thought. The most intriguing part of his book is how he poses questions to for the reader to consider, but doesn’t provide any answers. The Wisdom of Insecurity is a great book for whenever you feel the need to stop and think. —Anne

One of my favorite activities has always been stargazing. But because of this book, cloudgazing has become my new-found hobby. Now, I no longer have to wait for sunset to look up. After experiencing the enjoyment of The Cloud Collector’s Handbook, you will find yourself checking the weather, hoping for “partly cloudy” skies. This field guide not only provides you with a picture and explanation for each cloud, but you are also given a cloud collecting scorecard. For each cloud you spot, accumulate points! (The rarer the cloud, the higher the points—I’m up to 135!) Read it and become stuck in the clouds, dreaming of the day you will see a Kelvin-Helmholtz formation (look it up!).   —Anne

Does it ever seem like you are caught in a whirlwind of endless technology? As a skeptic that modern technology is doing us any really good, I was happy to see the brighter side of things in this book. Kevin Kelly, founding executive editor of Wired Magazine, does a fantastic job in explaining that even though technological growth is inevitable, it is an important part of who we are as humans. He begins by explaining that he too was once skeptical, and still is. But he realizes that we need technology as much as it needs us. Throughout the book, he eerily describes technology as its own living entity and how it has evolved in the exact same way that we have. I'm not going to run out and buy all the latest gadgets, but because of this book I will definitely consider the occasional doodad to better improve my life. —Anne

In my opinion, Chemistry is underrated. I was very pleased to find a book that shows the beauty and amazement that are the elements. Each page gives you a better understanding of their appearance, basic properties, and real world uses. This is not a normal periodic table you would find in a classroom. Whether you know anything about chemistry or not, it will leave you with a greater appreciation of the molecular world. A great book for nerds and non-nerds alike! —Anne

I had such a fun time reading this book. If the illustrations aren't intriguing enough, then the story will pull you in immediately. It was as if I escaped from reality for a day and venture out into Half World, a strange and off-balanced spirit realm. The story follows Melanie, a 14-year old girl, who feels she has little importance in this world. That all changes when her mother mysteriously disappears and she must enter into an eerie spirit world in order to save her. You will encounter help from talking animals and bizarre creatures as they try to defeat the villian, Mr. Glueskin (the name says it all!). It has all of the elements of a Hayao Miyazaki film. Anyone who is a fan of strange Japanese fantasy worlds must read this book. —Anne

I Love The New American Plate Cookbook! This is just not your average "diet cookbook." It has a great concept: revamp the way Americans approach meals. Generally, when planning a meal, meat is the main focus of the plate. This book, created by the American Institute of Cancer Research, puts an emphasis on dishes full of vegetables, fruits, and grains. As a student pursuing a nutrition degree, I though this book was perfect because it is a simple concept, with a new perspective, that can make a drastic change in your health. The recipes are delicious too! I can’t decide which is my favorite: Pear salad with ricotta cheese, acorn squash with cornbread stuffing, mushroom-pepper gumbo, or gingerbread. I’ve cooked over a dozen recipes so far and have yet to be disappointed. It is the epitome of guilt-free eating! —Anne
