This books intertwines the story of a hungry tiger that starts killing people in Far East Russia with the story of the men who are responsible for finding and killing the tiger. John Vaillant also gives interesting details on the environment, the background of tigers, the culture and hunting practices as well as the political and historical background of Russia and Asia (including the effects of perestroika on the poor of Russia). This myriad of information paints a detailed portrait making this recent story (late 1990’s) much more vivid and poignant. I think it is rare to read a story that is both intriguing and chock-full of knowledge; this book will draw in anyone that is interested in adventure/survival, history, conservation, wildlife and more.. —Autumn

Though it seams like a typical story at first—female protagonist goes to her murdered mother’s homeland seeking answers and possibly the throne—it is much more complex. This story is told in a realistic and disjointed way, drawing the reading forward and backward through time, as she makes sense of what is happening and connects the past to the present. The layers of fantasy, mythology, romance, history, politics, and race intertwine in a satisfactory and surprising ending. Though this book can be self-contained, the sequel comes out September 2010—and I can’t wait! —Autumn

I have eagerly anticipated this book since the Sword of Truth series ended. Though this book can be read without reading Terry Goodkind’s previous fantasy series, it is extremely satisfying if you have. The hero, Alex is a likable and talented artist that comes from a complicated family. Our heroine, Jax is a beautiful and mysterious woman that can pop out of thin air. Their relationship grows as Alex discovers that unconnected events from his past make sense. Their journey is exciting, fascinating and a lot of fun to read. I can’t wait for the sequel! —Autumn
