This book deserves to be read slowly which is no easy task as it is filled with near constant action. However, this isn’t “who’s gonna die?!” action (you know who will die by reading the summary on the back) — what keeps you on your seat is seeing just how far reaching that death is. It reaches physically, mentally and emotionally well beyond one person, or even one family. Several relevant issues are addressed. There are elements of domestic violence, underage drinking, homosexuality, bullying, "tiger mom" syndrome, sibling rivalry, war, and forced religion. With so many intense themes a book runs the risk of sacrificing character development, but somehow, Ilsa pulls it together. You may not always like or agree with these characters, but you find yourselves caring. Even the characters that you don't see that often are fully-realized, sympathetic people. Even if you’ve never lived in a small town, you’ve met someone from this book. Maybe you have reacted in the same way as the characters, or maybe you took a different path, but the fact remains, we have all seen this. We just didn't realize how our response would reach others. Ilsa has given us one scenario, and it's not that far fetched. - Stephanie
