Aristotle and Dante are two loners who find themselves in this coming of age novel. Award-winning poet and novelist Benjamin Alire Saenz has written a story that doesn't just capture Mexican culture, but one that captures what it's like being a teenager — the feelings of not knowing who you are or where you fit in, that awkward fear of first love, the struggle to be seen as an "adult" in your parents’ eyes. What I enjoyed most about Saenz's characters is the break from stereotypes. It was a refreshing portrayal of both Hispanic and gay young adults focusing more on self-exploration than sexuality, reinforced by unconditional parental love. I would definitely recommend this to fans of Perks of Being a Wallflower or any teenager on the road of self-exploration. Enjoy! - Anne

Downtown Phoenix Links

The Downtown Phoenix Public Market, in the heart of Roosevelt Row, is a showcase where local small-scale farmers intersect with local artists and crafters in the heart of the city. Everything offered for sale at the Downtown Phoenix Public Market is grown or made by the person selling it.

Roosevelt Row is a dynamic, walkable urban mixed-use area that is home to artist live/work spaces, gallery spaces and studio spaces. You'll find artists' receptions and gallery openings on every Third Friday of the month from 6 to 9 p.m. Restaurants and retail shops are also open for Third Fridays.

MADE Art Boutique, located on Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix, was selected as the New Times Best of Phoenix "Best Shopping Opportunity on Roosevelt." Quoting from the New Times review: "Too many times, we've fallen in love with some gorgeous artwork at a gallery on Roosevelt Row, but only had several dollars to spend, not several hundred. But MADE has stuff we'd gladly fork over our last few bucks to take home. A carefully edited selection of unique jewelry, tee shirts, and greeting cards appealingly displayed alongside some choice reads. A wonderful side note: occasional "themed" art exhibits, including a series of birdhouses, then boxes, by celebrated local artists like Joe Willie Smith and Sue Chenoweth. MADE has merch that's artistic and affordable -- ah, they've found our sweet spot."

First Fridays is the popular art walk that is held on the first Friday of each month from 6pm until 10pm in downtown Phoenix. It includes dozens of galleries, restaurants and live music venues. Details at artlink.

Tammie Coe Cakes is also on Roosevelt Row, just up the street from MADE. Renowned in the Valley for their amazing, fondant-covered creations, this bakery and coffee shop features an array of tasty goodies including cakes, tarts, cupcakes, cookies, muffins, scones, cream puffs, and breads. You'll also find Illy coffee, frozen drinks and a yummy sandwich of the day.
