Insurgent is 23-year-old Veronica Roth’s sequel to the quick-selling Divergent. It seems like it would be tough to compete with her debut bestseller, but luckily Roth doesn’t disappoint. Insurgent picks up immediately where its predecessor left off, and whether you are a lover of dystopian novels or feel completely over the genre after the heat of The Hunger Games, there is no mistake, Roth has created a masterpiece. Roth brings real emotion and strong determination into the world of the Factions - the five clans the populate Roth’s combative society. The second book brings stronger character development, more plot twists, and a deeper picture of the factions that were only sketched out in the first installment. The action raises your pulse, the secrets become deeper, and the suspense will leave you breathless.

With summer coming up you may be planning on taking a trip. And maybe you’re browsing the bookstore, looking for something fresh to occupy your time in transit. The last time this happened to me, I drifted toward a bright, teal book with what seemed to be a gripping pull on my heart. Most people wouldn't be caught dead in that section, but I couldn’t get away from this particular book; it was everywhere I looked, in and out of every corner. Finally opening the pages felt like falling into a wonderful abyss of literary fiction. Green masters a story line focused on terminal illness, yet the beauty that is between the lines shines through the tragedy, taking me in and out of happiness and tears. And to think I fell in love with a book by chance.

Being a broke college student, having a love for food, and a girlfriend who’s a chef, I often find myself staring at the fridge or walking around grocery stores in a state of indecision, like I'm buying a car or something of great importance. This book makes cooking fun, especially if you have the occasional vegetarian joining you for dinner (completely ruining your previous plans that took you 47 minutes of walking up and down the aisles of Trader Joe's salivating at all the delicious concoctions that sprung to mind). This book is for you, creating great meals from amazing practical ingredients that don't suck! Ingredients that are easy, delicious, and recipes written in Golden’s hilarious voice.—krysten

This book gives detailed insight into the drug’s unique history and role it played within the professional and personal lives of Halsted and Freud. I was immediately drawn to this book because of the cover. I know you're not suppose to judge a book by it's cover, but for this one, I obviously couldn't help it. It is beautiful, but the stories inside are even more so. This collection personally related to me, as a bookseller and the love of books I think we all have in common. You can feel the love and time that the author put into writing this book. As soon as I read the first story, I knew I had to buy it. I am not one to buy a collection of short stories, but I couldn't put this book down. The stories are short and sweet, and send your mind into a different dimension with its irony and beauty. —Krysten

I’m the lesbian that came out when I was thirteen, and everyone else ran away thinking I was infected with some disease, otherwise known as “lesbo-ism.” In high school, my friends stopped having lunch with me, rumors popped up about me, and eventually I had boyfriends to cover it up. Talking about these incidents seems so silly to me now, but lesbians and gays are going through this right now! Dan Savage has created something beautiful with this collection of essays. It Gets Better is not just a book, it's a book that saves lives. I can't tell you how many people I've talked to that have thought about suicide just because of the chastising, especially during high school. I can stand by this book and truly say, it does get better. —Krysten

I heard about this book through a recommendation, and I couldn't help but laugh out loud at the title. I mean, really? “Designated Ugly Fat Friend,” are you kidding me right now!? I read it anyways, being a sucker for teen literature. I am so happy I did. The Duff was a page turner that I finished in a day. I must say before I go any further, this book is for mature teens. I can't stress that enough. But anyways, it was one of those books you couldn't put down, no matter what was planned on your agenda that day. The best part about this book, it's not sappy or gushy. The Duff will certainly keep your attention whether you like it or not! —Krysten

If you are familiar with Ghost World or Wilson, you might appreciate this. Daniel Clowes’ latest masterpiece, Ice Haven is a fascinating short story of the disappearance of a young boy in a small northern town. I became really invested with the odd and complex characters, whom Clowes masterfully crafted in this suprisingly short graphic novel. This a fast read, and his cartoons really take this book to the next level.  —Krysten

I'm going to be completely honest, cats aren’t really my thing. On top of that, I would never choose a cat over a dog, which should have seriously driven me away from this little masterpiece. Jeffrey Brown, who is one of my favorite graphic novelists, made it so easy to give this book to your crazy cat lady, your mother, brother, cousin, even your neighbor! If you are a non-comic reader, you will still enjoy the quirky, yet charming observations that Brown has given us in this small book of epic proportions! —Krysten

All in all, this is an incredible work of the young (at the time) 21 year old Yoshihior Tatsumi, and a rare piece of Japanese cartooning history from the 50’s. This novel was created in twenty days, and now 50 years later is republished for all eyes of the modern century to see. This is coming from the man who coined the term “Gekiga”, meaning dramatic pictures, in 1957. Drawn and Quarterly, the Canadian publishers, have given us quite the treat by reprinting his work for all eyes to see. —Krysten

This graphic memoir is about the life and the works of Yoshihiro Tatsumi. It’s quite a heavy lift with the 800 plus pages, but definitely worth the cranium space. It gives history to how the Japanese manga history has evolved and how it has affected different manga artists to the present day. This specific work by Tatsumi is a collaboration of almost ten years of work. The knowledge you gather while reading this book is remarkable, even if you’re an avid manga reader. —Krysten

Lin is becoming a well recognized author, and this is just the beginning of what I hope will be a long career. —Krysten

This is a true tale of a tragic childhood, from the worst occurrences and vivid imagery. David Small is known for his children's stories, but he truly did wonders with his graphic memoir. There is something that is absolutely mesmerizing and intriguing about Murakami’s books. For example, the way his completely ordinary characters find themselves in completely extraordinary circumstances. I flew into this book with high expectations, because of After Dark, a brilliant novel I had previously read by him. These books are full of tedious details, illogical plot twists, and countless unbelievable happenings. You'll discover yourself sinking into each page. —Krysten
