Our original idea was to create a space in Tempe that would connect people with ideas and with each other. In the process of growing Changing Hands, we found encouragement and support from many overlapping communities -- scholars, educators, food co-opers, alternative and home schoolers, environmentalists, grass roots activists, poets, writers, musicians, artists, actors, seekers of truth and enlightenment, and lovers of the written word.
Our deepest thanks to all of you out there for the gift of community.

When Yupha's Thai Kitchen, one of our favorite restaurants, moved to within a mile of Changing Hands, next door to Pollack Tempe Cinemas on the SE corner of McClintock and Elliot, we were elated. Owner Yupha Dequenne, a one-time bank employee hails from her native Thailand where she always dreamed of one day opening her own restaurant. It's a dream come true for her and for us. ~ Bob & Gayle ~

BookPALS is an all-volunteer literacy program sponsored by the Screen Actors Guild Foundation. They put performing artists and trained community volunteers into hi-risk schools to read to classes of children on a weekly basis. In 2007 Arizona BookPALS read in classrooms around the state to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday and the 50th anniversary of his book, "The Cat in the Hat". Over 600 copies of "Green Eggs and Ham" were distributed by BookPALS thanks to a generous donation from the Phoenix Assistance League who received books from First Book. It takes a village to raise literate children! Thank you to all the volunteers and organizations involved in getting books and stories to students.

The Literate Chicks decided to do things slightly different when it comes to reviewing books – they get straight to the point with a 1-5 “flip flop” rating system that will give you a quick way to separate "the flip from the flop." For each book, they offer two short reviews, complete with why they did or didn’t like what they read. Each review comes with a Best Line feature too, because there is always at least one memorable sentence in a book.
