Click the links to join us today! | | Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk by Ben Fountain Hardcover, $25.99 » or Ebook, $12.99 » War is an ideal subject for storytelling. Almost all the great historical conflicts have timeless novels to their credit, but where is the great novel of Iraq or Afghanistan? We might be too close to the events for many to emerge, but Ben Fountain's Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk is the first great novel I've read about the Iraq War. Fountain finds the right note, mixing in plenty of humor with his authentic dialogue and the grim subject matter. Billy Lynn — a sheltered, sexually inexperienced member of the victorious Bravo squad — is treated to a hero's homecoming and paraded around like a trophy at a Dallas Cowboy's game. Through the resulting inebriation, violence, sexual exploration and soldier camaraderie, Fountain shows us the absurdity of two Americas: the one fighting the war and the one "supporting the troops." In the end we're left with questions about loyalty, duty, and freedom. But make no mistake, the novel offers no answers — it's much too smart for that. —Danny Browse more staff picks » | | HERB SALT SET Add seasonal herbs to normal sea salt to give extra flavor to your dishes.
