2016 Publishing Conference and Pitchapalooza

2016 Publishing Conference and Pitchapalooza
10AM - 7PM SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13

The Book Doctors, a.k.a. Arielle Eckstut and David Henry Sterry, host a step-by-step conference to take writers through the entire publishing process. They remove the smoke and mirrors from the confusing world of publishing to help you find your path to a successfully published book.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
PUBLISHING: TRADITIONAL, INDEPENDENT, OR SELF?
According to Eckstut and Sterry, it's the greatest time in history to be a writer. There are more paths to get published now than ever before. But all those options can be mystifying. They'll take you down the three main ways to get published today — the "Big 5," independent presses, and self-publishing — to help you decide which is best for you and your book.

PERFECT YOUR PITCH
A great pitch is one of the most powerful and underestimated tools any writer can have in his or her quest to be successfully published. Whether you're landing an agent and a book deal, self-publishing professionally, getting traction online, attracting media, convincing booksellers to carry your book, or building a following of loyal readers, the perfect pitch is the goose that will lay your golden publishing egg. Eckstut and Sterry show you how to craft a dynamite pitch. And be sure to bring your pitch with you, even if it's far from perfect!

LOCATE, LURE, AND LAND THE RIGHT AGENT
In many ways, it's much harder to find a great agent than it is to write a great book. Between his 15 years as a professional actor and 15 years as a professional writer, David Henry Sterry has convinced over 50 agents to represent him. He calls himself a "Professional Agent Hunter." After being a literary agent for 20 years, Arielle Eckstut gives you the perspective from behind the desk. Using exhaustive research methods, surgically pinpointed query letters, and gentle (but persistent) follow-up techniques, Eckstut and Sterry show you in easy-to-follow steps exactly how to find, approach, and land the literary agent who's right for you.

OTHER TOPICS
Choosing the right idea, creating a blockbuster title, putting together a selling proposal or manuscript, understanding e-books and print-on-demand technology, developing sales, marketing and publicity savvy, and building a platform through social media.

PITCHAPALOOZA
PITCHES OPEN TO ATTENDEES ONLYPUBLIC INVITED TO ATTEND

THE BASICS
Pitchapalooza is American Idol for books (only kinder and gentler). Twenty writers will be selected at random from among the Publishing Conference attendees to pitch their book. Each writer gets one minute, and only one minute, to convince the judges why their book deserves the judges' attention. At the end, those judges will pick a winner who will receive an introduction to an agent or publisher best suited for his or her book.

WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND
Whether potential authors pitch themselves, or simply listen to trained professionals critique each presentation, Pitchapalooza is educational and entertaining for one and all. At Pitchapalooza, judges will help you improve your pitch, not tell you how bad it is. Judges critique everything from idea to style to potential in the marketplace and much, much more. Authors will come away with concrete advice as well as greater understandings of the ins-and-outs of the publishing industry.
Please note: Pitchapalooza is open to the public. However, to enter the random drawing and have a chance to be one of twenty writers to pitch your book, you must be a registered conference participant. Members of the public who did not attend the conference cannot enter the drawing. ABOUT THE HOSTS
