Germany: Memories of a Nation Cover Image

Published: Vintage - November 14th, 2017

For a people as ancient as the Germans, there has not been a nation called Germany for almost their entire history. Germany's history is less a story of unity and national pride, and more a story of a fractured country with as many identities as there are sausages (hundreds). MacGregor attempts to wrestle that shattered history into a semblance of a cohesive historical narrative. While the book is not written in chronological order, that does not seem to have been the intention. This is where MacGregor shows his artful ability to use specific objects and images to describe as the Germans would say "der Zeitgeist". MacGregor tears down the idea of a national German character, and then proceeds to paint a picture of a persisting spirit of diversity in an ever changing modern country. ~Elijah

A wonderful addition to the books already written about the incomparable Zora Neale Hurston. When I first saw this book, I had two thoughts simultaneously. The first, "Brilliant! How has no one thought to use the medium of a graphic novel to tell Ms. Hurston's story before?!" The second, "How on earth can such a slim volume do her life justice?!" I'm happy to report the answer to the second question are Mr. Bagge's well-researched and comprehensive endnotes. They give full flesh to the action touched upon on each page and serve as an excellent guide for those wishing to dive deeper. Seldom is education this entertaining. ~Elisa

I wanted to choose Insomniac City by Bill Hayes who was Oliver's lover in the later part of his life but that book was chosen by another bookseller. So, I chose this lovely collection of essays that Sachs was working on when he died in 2015. He writes about his thoughts on evolution, creativity, time, memory, experience and consciousness. Perfect to pick up and read one essay at a time, when you have time to ponder and think. ~Gayle

A species of aristocratic TV-headed warmongers. A spaceship that is also a magical tree. A sex-themed dreadnought hiding hideous crimes. A cyclops pulp fiction writer with a secret message. His ex-wife, a warm-hearted drug dealer (who is also a magical tree). At the heart of this wacky, action-packed sci-fi series are new parents Ilana and Marko, enemy soldiers from warring species, desperately trying to raise their illegally-conceived child at the fringe of intergalactic society. Like the novels of D. Oswald Heist, this gloriously campy comic book masks a heartfelt story about the hypocrisy of war. You will regret missing this one. ~Jalen

A loving tribute to both Scooby Doo and H.P. Lovecraft, Meddling Kids performs an impressive juggling act, balancing zany cartoon antics, video game carnage, and seething, turn-on-the-lights-and-check-under-the-bed terror. Edgar Cantero conducts this glorious cacophony with a playful pen and a mischievous grin, uncovering wit and charm even in the darkest corners. His voice was a delight to read, clever and chaotic and wonderfully weird. I couldn’t get enough. Even when I checked the clock and discovered that it was suddenly 2:00 in the morning, I had trouble putting the book down. So hop in the Mystery Machine and be sure to buckle up – you’re in for a wild ride. ~Jason

An extremely intimate and unapologetic story of one young man's journey into the world of bi-polar disorder. It's the first person perspective that sets this book apart and tangles the reader up in another world. It's the mother who is never finished parenting but still let's go, who anchors hope. This is what we need in order to understand, empathize and create new approaches to those around us with mental illness. ~Julie

Jules Evans' work explores the many ways people through history have experienced spirituality in irrational ways and the current western stigma against it. The range of inclusiveness to what he deems as "ecstatic" is what makes this book interesting-- he ties a range of methods into being mediums of similar goals. Whether it be speaking in tongues or psychedelics, Evans looks at what makes them so powerful and why society has devalued these age old rituals. ~Kyle

Another day, another David Bowie biography. Let me start off by explaining that I have a natural bias for all things Bowie. As far as I'm concerned he's the perfect artist; his entire life was so deeply integrated into his work, that he as a person, as in the fictional narrative he perpetuated and the real man pulling the levers behind the curtain both, were apart of it. So this biography is particularly interesting to me, in that it is assembled of over 180 firsthand accounts with interviewees who intimately knew and worked with Bowie. There are so many different people in this book, who were involved with him on so many different levels, that it sheds light on areas of his life and work I didn't even know about prior to reading it. And I've read a lot about Bowie. It's a fascinatingly unique take on the biography genre as well, it assembles a strange and startling portrait in a sort of subjective abstract that's ultimately more illuminating than the words of any one person. And this is due in large part to the thorough and skilled authorship of Dylan Jones, who tied it all together, trimmed the fluff, and, of course, knew Bowie for well over 30 years. ~Salvatore

I don't particularly read a ton of non-fiction, but when I heard that Kareem was writing a book I had to pick it up because he is one of my favorite basketball players. However, this book is about much more than basketball. It is about a friendship that disregarded racial and religious discrimination. Kareem is known for being a very private person so it was very interesting to hear about his life, viewpoints, and experiences. After reading this book, I had a much better appreciation towards not only Kareem and Coach Wooden because despite all that they achieved in their respective careers you get the sense that they couldn't do it without each other. I picked this book up thinking I could learn more about Kareem's and Wooden's insight on the game of basketball, but finished learning life lessons that I will now carry with me for the rest of my life. ~Tim

I was late to the Sarah J. Maas party so I dove headfirst into both her Court of Thorns and Roses series as well as the Throne of Glass series. Tower of Dawn is a parallel story from the Throne of Glass series that concentrates on Chaol and Nesryn's story as they travel to the Southern Continent to try and gather allies for the coming war. It follows both main characters' journey in self discovery. One of the reasons I've been drawn into Maas' so swiftly is that her characters. They're fleshed out really well and so rounded. Tower of Dawn deals with physical and mental recovery, the fallout of war, and how it changes a character. It is so relatable and resonates so much that I find myself continually coming back to the series as a whole. ~Van-Lam
