When I read Alice Oseman I feel seen. They are poignant, nuanced, and compassionate in their descriptions of mental health struggles, and because of this their characters are so tangible and relatable. On the outside I am very different from music superstar, Jimmy, and dedicated fangirl, Angel, but their internal monologues are familiar and resonate deeply with me. Oseman is also a master of representation in her books. In this book we see characters of different backgrounds, religions, cultures, races, ethnic groups, gender and sexual orientations. I Was Born for This is a wonderful pocket universe to crawl into and feel safe and sound (get it? Because it’s about a band, and they make sound…. I’ll show myself out.)
