Staff Reviews

Junji Ito's Lovecraftian influences are obvious in this gnawing and visercal series. Uzumaki has reached international cult horror fame since it was first syndicated in 2001, and for good reason. I haven't been this deeply unsettled by a graphic novel since Black Hole, and that didn't have nearly the amount of creepy surrealist art. Unlike the "gorn" (gore-porn) movies your weird cousin likes to watch, this book is genuinely scary, never resorting to lowbrow blood and guts to inspire that growing sense of dread that horror junkies everywhere crave. Get this for anyone in your life that likes the things that go bump in the night.

If snails make you as uncomfortable as me and--like me--you enjoy feeling uncomfortable, then guess what? This is the manga you've been looking for. Regardless of your possible entomophobia, if you're unfamiliar with horror master Junji Ito's body of work, then be aware that Uzumaki is without a doubt his most fascinating and complete full-length narrative. Geometrically unsettling, the images employed in this series are some of Ito's most everlasting: bodies contort, grow horns in odd places and transform into completely different organisms altogether. Meanwhile one has to consider if there is a natural logic to this brand of horror or if it is simply imbued by the sublime, nightmarish artwork. By turns surreal but certifiably disturbing, Uzumaki is without a doubt one of my favorite manga ever and definitely one of Ito's best.
