Children's Book Week

Established in 1919, Children's Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country.

Bring the kids! To celebrate the launch of Children's Book Week, Changing Hands has partnered with The Newton—home of our Phoenix store and First Draft Book Bar—to feature artwork from three local New York Times bestselling illustrators: Caldecott honor winner Molly Idle (Flora and the Flamingo, People Don't Bite People), Chris Gall (Dinotrux, The Littlest Train), and Juana Martinez-Neal (Alma and How She Got Her Name).

The exhibit will be up for the month of May, with a family friendly illustrator reception on Sunday, April 29th. We'll have free light refreshments for kids and adults, and all three illustrators will do a super fun drawing demo!

PARKING / LIGHT RAIL
  • Don't want to drive? Take the Light Rail! It lets off at the Central Avenue/Camelback Park-and-Ride, which has hundreds of free parking spaces across the street from Changing Hands.

ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATORS
MOLLY IDLE is the Caldecott Honor–winning creator of Flora and the Flamingo. She lives in Tempe, Arizona, with her fabulous family, and when she's not scribbling away on her next project, she can be found (figuratively) devouring one of her favorite books, or (literally) devouring one of her favorite snacks…like blueberry pie!

CHRIS GALL is the award-winning author and illustrator of Dinotrux, a Publishers Weekly Best Children's Book which inspired a Netflix original TV series, and the other books in the series, including Dinotrux Dig the Beach and Revenge of the Dinotrux. His other picture books include Nanobots, Dog vs. Cat, Awesome Dawson, Substitute Creacher, and America the Beautiful, another Publisher's Weekly Best Children's Book. He lives in Tucson, Arizona.

JUANA MARTINEZ-NEAL is the daughter and granddaughter of painters. She started her story in Lima, Peru, and then moved to the United States. The winner of a 2018 Pura Belpre Illustrator Award for La Princesa and the Pea by Susan Middleton Elya, Juana Martinez-Neal is still writing the story of her life, with the help of her husband and three children, in Arizona.
