American swimmer and seven-time Olympic medalist Amanda Beard visits with her memoir In the Water They Can't See You Cry.

At the age of fourteen, Amanda Beard walked onto the pool deck at the Atlanta Olympics and left with two silvers and a gold medal. In her teens and twenties, she competed in three more Olympic games and enjoyed a lucrative modeling career on the side. Yet despite her success she suffered from clinical depression—indulging in self-destructive behavior and toxic relationships with high-profile male athletes. Only when she met her future husband, who discovered her cutting herself, did Amanda realize she needed help. Through her renewed faith in herself; the love of her family; and finally the birth of her baby boy, Blaise, Amanda transformed her life. In her memoir, she speaks about her struggles with depression, an eating disorder, and the unhealthy relationships she confused for love.

Amanda Beard was only 14 years old when she made her first Olympic appearance at the 1996 Atlanta Games and brought home three Olympic medals for Team USA. Iconic images of her holding a teddy bear on the podium made her America's sweetheart. Along with her Olympic success, Amanda attended the University of Arizona where she captured an individual NCAA National Championship in 2001. In 2003 she broke the world record in the 200-meter breaststroke. She spends much of her time doing appearances for her Olympic Sponsors, speaking engagements for Breast Cancer awareness and talking with young swimmers throughout the United States about overcoming obstacles and setting high goals. Now an active wife and mother, Amanda surprised the nation when she launched her comeback by making the US National Team and proving that she was indeed a contender for her 5th Olympic Games in 2012.
