Kelli Donley, a former Peace Corps volunteer who has lived and worked in Cameroon and Mozambique, launches her independently published debut novel, Under the Same Moon. Fifteen-year-old Abena Udate is kidnapped from an open-air market in rural Mozambique by a wandering American businessman. Smuggled into a neighborhood in suburban Phoenix, she must learn a new language and way of life, and remember never to become accustomed to luxuries she's never previously known. Abena's young brother Kupela will stop at nothing to find his sister and the muzungu who has stolen her. When he falls ill with malaria, an American expatriate uses every resource to keep him alive and unravel the mystery of his missing sister. Burdened with worries of flooding in Mozambique and the well-being of the brother she adores, Abena wonders if she'll ever escape the comfortable home of her captor for the mud hut in rural Beira she calls home. A portion of sales will benefit Esperanca (Esperanca.org), which helps improve health in the poorest communities of the world. Donley will also narrate a slideshow presentation.
