FRIDAY POETRY
Paul Lowes: Glass Fractured by Heaven
7PM FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14

Join us as teacher, activist, and outdoorsman Paul Lowes recites poetry from his new collection.

Lowes also shares stories from his childhood growing up in the Sonoran Desert through many pursuits into his current life as writer, cancer survivor, and "happy young oldster."

Open reading follows. Bring two poems, approximately one page each, to read to your fellow poets.

About the book:
Glass Fractured by Heaven is a journey of poetry in a fifth decade of writing, spanning stories of severe childhood illness into the realizations of health, from a longtime pursuit of hiking and hitchhiking repeatedly across America into a lifetime career as a much-rewarded public education teacher and advocate, from a Roman Catholic upbringing into what the author now calls, only semi-jokingly, spiritual anarchy, playing with the universe with whichever tools and breaks one is able to acquire.

Paul Lowes, the author, will read works from his various endeavors and journeys, and tell stories to illustrate the great fortune of feeling wildly alive on the edge of a playful planet. Comic adventures or ghost stories, poems of love and loneliness, of Sonoran cities and harsher outlands, but above all poetry in celebration of the wilderness and the wildness inside the human spirit, all these and more will be explored in this reading event. Live audience participation is also encouraged, if sometimes a bit on the raggedy side.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
PAUL LOWES and his family were on their way through the Sonoran Desert of central Arizona in 1957, when his severe childhood asthma shut down his lungs yet again, and the east Valley accidentally became the family's new home. Eventually, that same desert worked in favor of his regained health, as the fun and excitement of investigating the varied character of the Arizona backcountry made him stronger and always more grateful for days outside in the hardlands. From schooling, K through graduate, he went on to a career as short order cook, gourmet cook, bald eagle nest guardian, activist of multiple causes, public school history teacher, union president, and more. His careers, months at a time in the wild lands of America, and thousands of hitchhiking rides across the country, all together form the basis of a lifetime exploration of poetry, now into a fifth decade as his primary interest. Praising human curiosity above all else, he places poetic invention at its very heart.
