Independent Bookstore Day Celebration
SATURDAY, APRIL 28

Independent Bookstore Day
Read Write Resist
You've heard of Record Store Day. You've heard of Free Comic Book Day. Now there's Independent Bookstore Day, a nationwide celebration of indie bookstores like Changing Hands! We're joining over 500 independent bookstores across the country for parties, author readings, in-store events, and exclusive day-of merchandise.

Both locations of Changing Hands Bookstore will be celebrating with Poetry on Demand, literary collage with Cut+Paste PHX, Glitter Magic Storytime, the launch of our Summer Reading Passport for kids, and more.

As part of our ongoing READ WRITE RESIST partnership with ACLU Arizona, we'll also be celebrating the historical role of independent bookstores as centers of activism and social change. Representatives from the ACLU, Moms Demand Action, LUCHA, IRC Phoenix, CAIR-AZ, Planned Parenthood, and more will be at both Changing Hands locations from 11am to 3pm to help us all get informed and get active.

2018 INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORE DAY AUTHOR AMBASSADOR

2018 Independent Bookstore Day author ambassador Celeste Ng says, "My favorite thing about independent bookstores is that they all have their own distinct personalities: each reflects not just the tastes but also the ideals of its community. From the second you walk in, you get a sense of what the people who shop there know and enjoy—as well as what's currently on their minds, what they want to learn, and what they value: in short, what kinds of people they want to be. Bookstores are more than just repositories of knowledge, they're living, breathing, evolving representations of our best selves."

ABOUT INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORE DAY

Independent Bookstore Day500 bookstores. Exclusive books and art pieces. One day only. Join the party!

Independent bookstores are not just stores, they're community centers and local anchors run by passionate readers. They are entire universes of ideas that contain the possibility of real serendipity. They are lively performance spaces and quiet places where aimless perusal is a day well spent.

In a world of tweets and algorithms and pageless digital downloads, bookstores are not a dying anachronism. They are living, breathing organisms that continue to grow and expand. In fact, there are more of them this year than there were last year. And they are at your service.

"Consumers control the marketplace by deciding where to spend their money. If what a bookstore offers matters to you, then shop at a bookstore. If you feel that the experience of reading a book is valuable, then read the book. This is how we change the world: we grab hold of it. We change ourselves."
—Anne Patchett, bestselling author and co-owner of Parnassus Books
