Ellen Oh is really good at showing emotion in SPIRIT HUNTERS. I love how the author has "diary entries" from the main character at the end of every chapter, because it really lets you see her inner thoughts. There is adventure throughout the entire book, and that made the whole story exciting. The book also has a very strong theme of family. I really loved the ending because it made the meaning of the title clear. -Julissa, 12
You'll never want to put this book down – the pages even say, “don't close the book!” THE CURSE OF EINSTEIN'S PENCIL is about creativity, braininess and lessons of life. When Beatrice Garcia finds Judith Einstein's magic pencil on the ground she takes it home, but when the pencil breaks and all the magic falls out she is puzzled. I loved this book because I felt like I was in the pages with Bea and Judith. I hope when you read this book you will find yourself crawling into the pages too! -Kate, 8

I was instantly swept into the pages of THE GREAT TREEHOUSE WAR by Lisa Graff! I kept feeling laughter coming out as I read this book. It's about a girl named Winnie who stays in a treehouse only on Wednesdays. One my favorite parts of the book was reading about all the hilarious holidays Winnie's mom and dad come up with to compete with one another – like "Hug a Plumber Day" and "National Peach Cobbler Day." This book taught me you don't have to have everything exactly equal to be happy. It was one of the best books I've ever read! -Kambria, 8
When I read MOON SHADOW, I got pulled into its exciting plot and storyline. Reading this book made me think about the two sides and personalities one person can have. You can be shy on the outside, but deep inside is courage that you have to reach inside to pull out. Moon Shadow made me realize how much I depend on, and need my friends, and how hard it can be to put a friendship back together. MOON SHADOW is filled with friendship, love, anger, and magic. The true meaning that I found in this book was no one can control you because you are your own person and can do whatever you want. -Marina, 12
AGATHA PARROT AND THE ODD STREET SCHOOL GHOST is a great book for kids who love to laugh. This book is an easy read and it will keep your attention till the very end. You will most likely relate to the characters in the book because you probably have some of these characters in your life right now. There are your average mean girls, your best friends, the kind teacher, funny principal, odd janitor and an awesome family. There are also some great pictures in this book. I would recommend this book to all kids who like a little mystery combined with some comedy. -Milan, 11
I knew I would love this book before I read the first word because Lisa McMann’s books always take me on exciting adventures. I was immediately pulled into the story and given a fresh perspective on extraordinary powers. I admired Charlie for her courage and felt connected to Maria and Max as they encouraged Charlie to explore the range of her powers. I can’t wait to read the second book in this fun trilogy. -Natalie, 10
This book is really exciting to read because the characters are trying to save the earth from climate change before it's too late. I enjoyed reading about how Eleanor and her friends approach problems by working together as a team. Instead of one character dominating the book and insisting that everyone support one perspective, each person suggests an idea and talks about how that idea would work before they decide on a solution together. After I read this book, I felt inspired to think of a solution for global warming. -Natalie, 10

LEMONS is one of the best books that I have ever read. The whole story is adventurous and funny. I love the unique way that Melissa Savage conveys the emotions, both sad and joyful, of the characters through the way she writes her story. The exciting plot line always has an element of adventure as the characters get to know each other. The ending is satisfying, but it left me wondering what the characters will do next. I highly recommend reading this amazing book of loss and friendship. -Julissa, 12

This story shredded my heart to pieces. All of the horrible things these people had to go through were evil and terrible and cruel. Yet, even with all of the absolutely messed up things going on in the book, I could not put it down. The author just tells you outright what happened to him and and his family, which is what made this book so captivating and enthralling to me; there was no sugar coating or dumbing down, and this adds another layer to the book. Even though it's a story, Michael's tale is highly informative. I learned so much from this book -- which is why I highly recommend it from the bottom of my heart to you. This story is beautiful and messed up and educational. -Ari, 15

Ghosts, dark magic and disappearing classmates are only a few of the obstacles that Katherine Bateson and her siblings encounter. While their father is away on a secret mission during the war and their mother is in London, the Batesons and an American named Peter are sent off to the mysterious Rookskill Castle in Scotland. The mechanical shrieks and strange teachers lurking the castle aren’t the only things that frighten the children. Katherine becomes very suspicious about Lady Eleanor, a sinister woman who rules over the castle, who might have some secrets of her own. Through thick wool uniforms, magical charms, and secret passageways, the children must uncover an answer to these eerie occurrences. I loved how the author combines magic with mystery into a novel that weaves through a dark story about some very intelligent children. -Stormy, 14
Although this book is for younger readers, it will appeal to a wide variety of ages. The character maintains a unique and youthful voice throughout the entire book, but the reader experiences very complicated and relevant issues that are handled beautifully within this novel, such as mental illness and abuse. Although this story is heartbreaking to read at times, the messages of family, love and coming of age will stick with you forever. -Ava, 16

I was eager to read about Elon Musk’s life since I am a huge fan of Tesla Motors. I was fascinated that Elon grew up in Africa, had a childhood filled with challenges that people can relate to, and overcame several obstacles to become the successful person he is today. I felt impressed by his lifelong desire to create a positive impact for humanity and help humans become a multi-planetary species. Even though this is a non-fictional story, I was captivated by Elon’s incredibly passionate and creative entrepreneurial spirit that never gives up despite obstacles. -Natalie, 11

I love all of Jerry Spinelli’s books, but I was surprised that this book mesmerized me immediately. With the constant realizations and plot twists, this book kept me on my toes wanting to read more. -Natalie, 11
I was immediately pulled into this book by the descriptive language and writing style. The main character’s skin is darker than midnight without a moon. Unfortunately she lives in a time when darker skin was not accepted and she faces many challenges due to racism. This book is filled with hope, humor, encouragement, and some disappointments. As I read this book, the main character spun me through a whirlwind of thoughts, feelings, and emotions as her character strengthened and changed throughout the book. I really hope there is a sequel. -Natalie, 11

RICKETY STITCH AND THE GELATINOUS GOO is one of the most exciting and creative graphic novels I have read to date. Its characters, including a singing skeleton and a personified ball of goo, are some of the most fun creatures to follow. In addition, the art style is fantastic, helping characters like these to express specific emotions while at the same time using specific colors and brush strokes to develop mood in the surrounding environments. The plot itself is one of the best in any graphic novel, following Rickety Stitch as he pieces the mystery of his life together in a thrilling and suspenseful quest. -Sam, 15

Jennifer Weiner’s THE LITTLEST BIGFOOT paints a tale that no one can resist. Sweet, witty, and topped with enough adventure to keep readers in anticipation, it’s definitely a keeper. This book was emotionally gripping. Alan Gratz's writing is incredibly realistic. I felt tense, sad, scared, excited, relieved, and nervous as the catastrophic political situations led to each family’s decision to seek shelter away from their war-torn countries. As the three separate refugees and their families pursue safety, their stories begin to meld together in a heartbreaking way. This book reminded me of a Shakespeare play, because of the multiple narrators, the tragedies, and the storyline interconnections. If I could sum up the entire story with one sentence, it would be: ‘Acceptance is important, because someday you might be in need of it too.' -Natalie, 11
I was so excited to write this review because this is one of my favorite books of the year. It is a milkshake of Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, a pinch of Tin Tin and a dash of Mission Impossible.
