Published: Gibson House Press - April 5th, 2022

This debut was unexpected and utterly stunning. Amy E. Casey, in her debut novel, has written something raw, vulnerable, and ethereal. I felt transported to the shores of Lake Superior, mist rolling through, eerie stillness to the air, with a hint of the unnatural, and found three characters I couldn't stop reading about. Flawed, secretive, broken, and yet compelling and beautiful, their stories leading me deeper into the dramatic narrative,

Published: Oni Press - April 16th, 2019

Ooof. As I closed this story I was sobbing. This may look like a beautifully illustrated, whimsical graphic novel (which don't get me wrong, it truly is), but what you don't see until you read it is you're holding a handbook on grieving. This novel is important. Grief is difficult for everyone to navigate, but especially kids. One of the bigger emotions we don't talk about enough is the anger that comes and the emotional responses to grief. In this story, Mai K. Nguyen tells how Willow is struggling with her monsters (read: emotions) and goes on a journey both adventure wise and internally to process what has happened. 15/10 stars please read this.

Published: Random House Graphic - January 18th, 2022

Just an absolutely gorgeous graphic novel with a story that is profound and wonderful. Life has a way of bringing people together and then having their paths diverge for a time. There is always a chance that fate brings them back, but not because they are soulmates or any of the overly mushy reasons, but simply by chance when they have become who they needed to be as individuals. I think that theme of self-discovery and making the best choices for ourselves will really resonate long after finishing this story.

In this Arthurian retelling, what comes next is a ticking clock to find a soulmate, many dates that become a comedy of errors, and a hapless king secretly in love with his magician but too blind to notice he feels the same. Erik J Brown wrote about a new pandemic, one that came after Covid, and how two young men made it through and fell in love in the process. You'll be hard pressed to find queer representation in apocalypse romance stories since the genre is weirdly tied to heteronormative storytelling. This was a refreshing, quick paced, adorable, and funny as hell addition to a genre that had been in need of new blood.

There is something mesmerizing and intoxicating about this book. Once I started, I couldn't stop. I was drawn into the story of two sisters. One presumed dead for years, until she slips up and ends up in the background of a news story, oceans and continents away from home. The other, desperate to find the truth of what happened to her sister, having grown into a woman bearing the burden of family trauma and heartache, follows the mystery to find what's real. Their stories — told separately — bring about some deep truths, deep secrets, and each sister finding her way again. The last chapter had me absolutely sobbing in the best way possible. Love finds a way, we just have to make it through to find it.

After the year of isolation and stagnancy we all just experienced, Wintering by Katherine May should be required reading. As we start to ask the question of what can be learned from hard seasons, May answers with deep truths and beautiful insights. I wouldn’t have ever guessed that her personal journey with chronic sickness and the hibernation patterns of dormice would work together to make me cry, but cry I did. Every few pages I needed to stop reading and take a moment to myself as May created space to process emotions I didn’t have a name for. It is simply a beautiful work on finding joy and peace through life’s toughest moments.

Here's to the adventurers, the whimsy chasers, and the memory makers. The Night Walk by Marie Dorleans spoke to core memories I made as a kid. My parents would wake me up for a "too well to attend" school day and off we would go on an adventure. Read this while planning your next spontaneous too well to attend day.
