Gayle's May Letter: Join us for Indie Bookstore Day!

Dear Bookstore Friends,

Gayle ShanksDan Barber TED talkIt's fun to celebrate — birthdays, anniversaries, milestones, new children in the family, momentous achievements, the changing of the seasons. And that's exactly what we're doing, celebrating, all day Saturday, May 2 at both Changing Hands Bookstore locations and First Draft Book Bar. It's Independent Bookstore Day, and all across the country hundreds of bookstores like ours are celebrating, too. We know you love a gathering place where you know the names of the booksellers who help you find just the right book, where the whole family feels comfortable and can come back week after week for a dose of culture and fun. This is clearly cause for celebration.

A few years ago, indie bookstores like Changing Hands were on the decline, but there has been a resurgence of support nationwide. The idea of buying locally has taken hold in a huge way and new stores are opening all over the country. Hurray, is what I say! Lucky towns and cities get to have their own unique, interesting, quirky bookstore unlike any other, anywhere.

Record Store DayCalifornia Bookstore DayBut as different as indies are, we're also copycats in a way. Indie music stores have had Record Store Day for years now, celebrating unique CDs, vinyl, artwork, and paraphernalia that you can get only if you go to an indie record store. And last year, California bookstores launched their first California Bookstore Day, which was so successful that bookstores in the rest of the country wanted to jump on the bandwagon. Why let California have all the fun? Why not Arizona, too? And Colorado and New York and North Carolina and Indiana?

CouponWe have some great items for sale that you can get only at indies like Changing Hands. Included are extremely limited-edition box sets of books about books, essays by Roxane Gay, tote bags by Roz Chast, prints by Chris Ware and Allie Brosh, a broadside from Stephen King, joke books from leading children's illustrators, "I Love to Read" cotton onesies, and more. It's all available in-store only starting on May 2, and when it's gone it's gone (for a complete list of those items, click here). We'll also have balloons and treats, and we'll be offering happy hour prices all day long at First Draft Book Bar in Phoenix. We're also offering a 15% storewide discount at both Changing Hands locations, so we hope you can make it.

It's May. The weather is nice. Ride the light rail into Phoenix if you haven't visited our new store yet. (Is 10 months old still a new store?) While you're there, eat next door at Southern Rail. If you're in Tempe, try the Wildflower or Began's Classic Italian Pizza or 24 Carrots or Mac's Broiler & Tap. Bring the kids. Bring your parents. Bring your friends. Make it an outing. Celebrate books and reading and community and local businesses and gathering places and good food and great authors who keep writing great books and, and, and . . .

Can't wait to see you all on May 2nd!
