7pm | PHOENIX | TERRENCE MOORE | 66 ON 66: A PHOTOGRAPHER'S JOURNEY | Photographer Terrence Moore signs copies of his monograph dedicated to the iconic Route 66. Rte. 66 is an iconic road that has been celebrated in story, song, films, and more. Justly known as "The Mother Road," this highway became the vital path for travelers, tourists, and fortune-seekers. However, after the advent of the superhighway and the Interstate system of the 1950s, Rte. 66 gradually fell out of use, leaving behind fascinating relics of a bygone era—roadside attractions, marvelous kitsch, storefronts, and the great neon artifacts that still light up the night along the highway. Moore has traveled and photographed this road since he first drove it with his parents in the 1960s. Though he has covered this subject for more than 40 years as a professional photographer, never before has his work been collected in book form. This volume highlights 66 of his finest 35mm color film images—a stunning chronicle of this storied road in states from Missouri to California. More »

6pm | PHOENIX | JEFF PEARLMAN WITH DAN MANUCCI | FOOTBALL FOR A BUCK: THE CRAZY RISE AND CRAZIER DEMISE OF THE USFL |
The New York Times bestselling author presents his book about the outrageous, "you-can't-make-this-up" story of the USFL. The United States Football League—known to millions of sports fans as the USFL—was the last football league to not merely challenge the NFL, but to cause its owners and executives to collectively shudder. It spanned three seasons, 1983-85. It secured multiple television deals. It drew millions of fans and launched the careers of legends. But then it died beneath the weight of a particularly egotistical and bombastic owner—a New York businessman named Donald J. Trump. In Football for a Buck, the dogged reporter and biographer Jeff Pearlman draws on more than four hundred interviews to unearth all the salty, untold stories of one of the craziest sports entities to have ever captivated America. From 1980s drug excess to airplane brawls and player-coach punch-outs, to backroom business deals, to some of the most enthralling and revolutionary football ever seen, Pearlman transports readers back in time to this crazy, boozy, audacious, unforgettable era of the game. He shows how fortunes were made and lost on the backs of professional athletes and also how, thirty years ago, Trump was a scoundrel and a spoiler. Football for a Buck is sports as high entertainment—and a cautionary tale of the dangers of ego and excess. More »

There There: A novel

by Tommy Orange | Hardcover, $25.95 »

There There "There There is the kind of book that grabs you from the start and doesn't let go, even after you've long since turned the last page. It is a work of fiction and every word of it is true. Tommy Orange writes with a palpable anger and pain, telling the history of a cultural trauma handed down through generations in the blood and bones and stories of individual lives. He also writes with incredible heart and humor, infusing his characters with a tangible humanity and moments of joy even as they are headed toward tragedy. There There has claimed a permanent spot in my heart despite having broken it or maybe even because it did. I think this may be the best book I've ever read."  —Heather

Fruit of the Drunken Tree: A Novel

by Ingrid Rojas Contreras | Hardcover, $26.95 »

Fruit of the Drunken Tree: A Novel " When I started this book, I knew it would break my heart. The story tells of two sisters—Chula and Cassandra—and their new maid, Petrona, set in 90's Colombia during the guerilla wars and Pablo Escobar's reign. This is a story not just about physical warfare, but also race and class and the internal wars we fight every day between right and wrong. It also begs the question: how does one survive amidst such division, corruption and turmoil? More importantly, it's a story of two girls—Chula and Petrona—and their powerful friendship that threatens them both. This book opened my eyes to a different story of Colombia and its people than the one reported in the news. The novel sucks you in from page one to its stunning conclusion. Contreras' prose is powerful, elegant and lyrical. You'll hold your breath and your heart will pound: it's just that good."  —Michelle

A Lucky Man: Stories

by Jamel Brinkley | Hardcover, $26.00 »

A Lucky Man: Stories " A Lucky Man marks the arrival of a brilliant new voice in contemporary fiction. In quiet, elegant prose, debut author Jamel Brinkley renders characters who are universally relatable yet entirely unique, with all the complexities and subtleties of living breathing people. As I read their stories, I was swept up into the lives of these characters, so much so that at times I forgot I was reading fiction and felt instead that I was reading letters from old friends. This is an important and powerful collection. Its slice-of-life stories glow with soft light, and by their gentle radiance, we can see rich details and vibrant beauty in the dark corners of human experience. Every moment held me in silent awe."  —Jason
