You'd think you're too smart to fall for a con—particularly a con involving a murderous German immigrant, who posed as a member of the high-profile Rockefeller family for nearly two decades. But that's exactly what happened to Ivy-educated author Walter Kirn—he fell for it. In Blood Will Out, Kirn reveals how he was duped by a real-life Mr. Ripley posing as "Clark Rockefeller," a man who preyed on Kirn's vulnerability, his willingness to politely collude in lies rather than create a scene, and his pride in keeping such distinguished company—to literally get away with murder. Blood Will Out is not just a good yarn, but an excellently written one as well. Kirn dissects his own deception with the regret of hindsight and the frustrated rage of a man betrayed by a fiend he thought a friend. You can't help but feel sorry for Kirn, and share the same manic creeping dread as he discovers just how much he aided in his own beguilement. If you loved In Cold Blood, this one is for you. Just don't read it with the lights off. --Jennie

Jesse Ball has put an intriguing spin on a murder-mystery story with Silence Once Begun. After a string of people vanish from the same Japanese village, a fictional caricature of the author travels as a journalist to investigate the man who has confessed to committing these mysterious crimes. Although the true identity and nature of the crimes comes out in the text within, the story of Oda Sotatsu, the man who wrongly confessed, is where the real mystery lies. After turning in his signed confession, Oda took a vow of silence and would not speak even to his own family or legal aids. Through a series of police interrogations, family interviews and a handful of photographs, Jesse Ball has uncovered how far this peculiar man would go to keep his word. --Jeremy

Before We Met will get many comparisons to Gone Girl, and rightly so! Whitehouse's newest grapples with many of the same issues as Gillian Flynn's fantastic book, mainly the idea that we can never fully know another person, never completely know their motivations and thoughts. I was instantly engrossed in this tale of marital discord and raced through to the finish! --Lauren

McMahon specializes in books that not only explore the intricacies of mother-daughter relationships but are insidiously creepy, crawling into your head and staying there. The Winter People is such a book and I couldn't put it down until I'd finished every last gory page! It alternates between the present and the past. In the present, a girl is searching for her mother who is normally overprotective, but has disappeared, and a another woman is searching for clues regarding her husband's mysterious death. In the past, one mother's grief has a violent impact that spans generations. I could go on and on, but I'll leave you with this: at one point, someone gets skinned. What a gruesome, haunting read! --Lauren

Despite winning the 2013 Crime Writers’ Association International Dagger Award and being selected as the Number one Publishers Weekly Fall 2013 Top Ten Mysteries, "Alex" has been flying under the radar. An import from France, Lemaitre's fantastic mystery had me thinking one thing in the beginning, another in the middle and something completely different by the end! Is it sacrilege to say I liked Doctor Sleep even better than The Shining? In this sequel I loved seeing Danny's life as an adult and the wonderful villains: polyester-clad, camper-driving vampires--of a sort--who feed off the "steam" kids with the Shining emanate after being tortured to death. This book kept me awake all night, jumping at every noise! Stephen King fans, new and old, will devour his latest novel and celebrate the return of the King of Horror! --Lauren

I saw Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? years ago and I absolutely loved it: creepy, campy and endlessly quotable--it's everything I love in a movie! So I was excited to see that the story that inspired the movie was coming back into print, along with several previously unpublished stories. Farrell's writing is sharp--more literary than I expected and completely enjoyable. I would call this a guilty pleasure, but I feel no guilt--it's the perfect book to enjoy with a box of chocolates and a growing sense of unease! --Lauren

What to say about Joe Hill's latest book? I'm a fan of all his novels, each more twisted than the last, this one being the very pinnacle of all that is grotesque. It is a no-holds-barred horror show (both in the regular sense and in the Clockwork Orange sense), a wild ride that leaves the reader unsettled and re-checking all the locks in the house, and I enjoyed every minute! --Lauren

It has always struck me as a curious part of human nature that we should wonder, to the point of obsession, about the pasts of those we care most deeply about. Underneath this is the question of how much we really can know about another person, but perhaps more importantly how much we really have a right to know. The protagonist in our novel, Alex, finds himself faced with questions such as these after the murder of his wife, and learns from her death much more of her past than she would ever have told him in her life. Every Contact Leaves a Trace is the moving, honest, occasionally heartwrenching story of Alex’s journey to discover what really happened to his wife, and to reconcile what he learns with the love they held for each other. - Em

I love finding a great new author whose first book draws me in, keeps me reading, and whom I can recommend to our customers. S. J. Watson is just such a writer.  Before I Go to Sleep is a literary thriller that is both well written and scary, but not too scary. And if you are a wannabe author and like movies such as MementoGround Hog Day and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind—movies that feature memory and suspense—this debut novel will drive you crazy with envy for its author. The heroine, Christine, has lost her memory in an accident; she wakes each morning having forgotten who she is, who she is sleeping with, what her former life had to do with her current reality. She doesn’t know if she can trust the doctor she is secretly seeing, or the husband who tells her every day what happened twenty years ago. She writes in a journal, and each day rereads the entire book so she can make sense of her crazy existence.  Did she have a child, was she injured in a car accident, is her best friend living in Australia or someplace nearby trying to find her? Who are the people in the pictures that surround her bathroom mirror? I couldn’t stop reading this novel and think it would make a great movie! - Gayle
