IN CONVERSATION WITH CHRIS STEIN AND ROB ROTH

Debbie Harry: Face It

OFFSITE | 7PM SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5

Book Cover
The name Debbie Harry evokes many images: seminal rock ’n’ roll figure, complex songstress, incandescent front woman, actor and fashion icon. Now, after decades as a vibrant global force and a shaper of pop culture, Debbie Harry recounts her journey from an irreverent Lower East Side punk goddess to a bona fide international ambassador of New York cool in her long-anticipated memoir, Face It.

Join Blondie frontwoman Debbie Harry for an illuminating evening with Blondie co-founder and renowned photographer, Chris Stein, and multidisciplinary artist and director, Rob Roth—accompanied by a visual presentation.

DEBBIE HARRY is a musician, actor, activist, and the iconic face of New York City cool. As the frontwoman of Blondie, she and the band forged a new sound that brought together the worlds of rock, punk, disco, reggae and hip-hop to create some of the most beloved pop songs of all time. As a muse, she collaborated with some of the boldest artists of the past four decades. The scope of Debbie Harry’s impact on our culture has been matched only by her reticence to reveal her rich inner life—until now.

In an arresting mix of visceral, soulful storytelling and stunning visuals that includes never-before-seen photographs, bespoke illustrations and fan art installations, Face It upends the standard music memoir while delivering a truly prismatic portrait. With all the grit, grime, and glory recounted in intimate detail, Face It re-creates the downtown scene of 1970s New York City, where Blondie played alongside the Ramones, Television, Talking Heads, Iggy Pop and David Bowie.

Following her path from glorious commercial success to heroin addiction, the near-death of partner Chris Stein, a heart-wrenching bankruptcy, and Blondie’s breakup as a band to her multifaceted acting career in more than thirty films, a stunning solo career and the triumphant return of her band, and her tireless advocacy for the environment and LGBTQ rights, Face It is a cinematic story of a woman who made her own path, and set the standard for a generation of artists who followed in her footsteps—a memoir as dynamic as its subject. Augusten Burroughs: Toil & Trouble: A Memoir

TEMPE | 7PM WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9

Book Cover
The #1 New York Times bestselling author visits Changing Hands Tempe with a stunning new memoir that is tender, touching ... and just a little spooky.

"Here’s a partial list of things I don’t believe in: God. The Devil. Heaven. Hell. Bigfoot. Ancient Aliens. Past lives. Life after death. Vampires. Zombies. Reiki. Homeopathy. Rolfing. Reflexology. Note that 'witches' and 'witchcraft' are absent from this list. The thing is, I wouldn’t believe in them, and I would privately ridicule any idiot who did, except for one thing: I am a witch."

For as long as Augusten Burroughs could remember, he knew things he shouldn't have known. He manifested things that shouldn't have come to pass. And he told exactly no one about this, save one person: his mother. His mother reassured him that it was all perfectly normal, that he was descended from a long line of witches, going back to the days of the early American colonies. And that this family tree was filled with witches. It was a bond that he and his mother shared--until the day she left him in the care of her psychiatrist to be raised in his family (but that's a whole other story). After that, Augusten was on his own. On his own to navigate the world of this tricky power; on his own to either use or misuse this gift.

From the hilarious to the terrifying, Toil & Trouble is a chronicle of one man's journey to understand himself, to reconcile the powers he can wield with things with which he is helpless. There are very few things that are coincidences, as you will learn in Toil & Trouble. Ghosts are real, trees can want to kill you, beavers are the spawn of Satan, houses are alive, and in the end, love is the most powerful magic of all. Stephen Chbosky: Imaginary Friend

TEMPE | 7PM THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10

Book Cover
The #1 international bestseller of The Perks of Being a Wallflower presents his long-awaited second novel, an epic work of literary horror.

We can swallow our fear or let our fear swallow us.

Single mother Kate Reese is on the run. Determined to improve life for her and her son, she flees an abusive relationship in the middle of the night with Christopher at her side. Together, they find themselves drawn to the tight-knit community of Mill Grove, Pennsylvania. It's as far off the beaten track as they can get. Just one highway in, one highway out.

At first, it seems like the perfect place to finally settle down. Then Christopher vanishes. For six awful days, no one can find him. Until Christopher emerges from the woods at the edge of town, unharmed but not unchanged. He returns with a voice in his head only he can hear, with a mission only he can complete: Build a tree house in the woods by Christmas, or his mother and everyone in the town will never be the same again.

Imaginary Friend

by Stephen Chbosky | Hardcover, $30.00 »

Lalani of the Distant Sea When I found out that Stephen Chbosky had written a horror novel, I was practically frothing at the mouth in my excitement to read it. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of my favorite books of all time, and I was eager to see what such a talented and compassionate author would do with the horror genre. I certainly wasn't disappointed. In fact, though my hopes and expectations were outrageously high, this book is everything I wanted it to be and more. Ominous, eerie, and surreal, Imaginary Friend creates a very real feeling of danger and dread that only grows as the story unfolds, all while evoking a sense of childlike wonder and imagination that serves to make the fear feel even bigger. The story moves like a dream, enchanting and adventurous yet whispering of nightmares around every corner. And every step of the way, it was a joy to walk beside Christopher, an infinitely endearing character who reminded me of everything I loved about The Perks of Being a Wallflower in the first place. It may have taken Chbosky 20 years to release his second book, but I can assure you, it was well worth the wait.  —Jason
