John Hodgman: Vacationland

Bestselling author, comedian, and The Daily Show contributor shares his latest, a memoir of his travels in New England.

In conversation via Skype with George R.R. Martin, author of Game of Thrones.

Disarmed of falsehood, he was left only with the awful truth: John Hodgman is an older white male monster with bad facial hair, wandering like a privileged Sasquatch through three wildernesses: the hills of Western Massachusetts where he spent much of his youth; the painful beaches of Maine that want to kill him (and some day will); and the metaphoric haunted forest of middle age that connects them.

Vacationland collects these real life wanderings, and through them you learn of the horror of freshwater clams, the evolutionary purpose of the mustache, and which animals to keep as pets and which to kill with traps and poison. There is also some advice on how to react when the people of coastal Maine try to sacrifice you to their strange god.

Though wildly, Hodgmaniacally funny as usual, it is also a poignant and sincere account of one human facing his forties, those years when men in particular must stop pretending to be the children of bright potential they were and settle into the failing bodies of the wiser, weird dads that they are. Waiting for the Punch: Words to Live by from the Wtf Podcast

by Marc Maron, John Oliver (Foreword by) | Hardcover, $27.99 »

The Art of Mondo Why do I relate so much to Marc Maron? He is after all a twice-divorced 54 year old man, perhaps a bit on the neurotic side, with a slew of cats and an excellent record collection. Maybe it's because, and I'm not gonna lie, it's plausible, that this fate could be down the proverbial road for me. However, even greater than our shared neuroses is the fact that Maron has reached a point in his career where he is an open, honest human being, with just the right amount of egotism and the right amount of humility, in almost equal measure. And you can't help but to relate to this guy, you can't help but to be put at ease and open up to him. Which is exactly what all of his guests do, mostly creative types, and even, then sitting-president, Barack Obama, on his podcast through long-form casual conversational interviews. And in the process of which you can't help but to connect with these people as well, when all of the show-biz gimmickry and typical talk-show protocol is cut away, and you became startlingly aware of just how much we all have in common as people. This book is a synthesis of that very process, split up into sections like "Growing Up," "Sexuality," and "Relationships," and edited by theme very seamlessly and fluidly, with sometimes deep, beautiful, and even depraved, extrapolations from interviews from all across the podcast's nearly decade-long history.  —Salvatore
