Joanna Ruth Meyer: Echo North

BOOK COVERAuthor Photo
The local author discusses her second novel in conversation with fellow author Laura Weymouth, the author of The Light Between Worlds, in Tempe.

Echo Alkaev's safe and carefully structured world falls apart when her father leaves for the city and mysteriously disappears. Believing he is lost forever, Echo is shocked to find him half-frozen in the winter forest six months later, guarded by a strange talking wolf—the same creature who attacked her as a child. The wolf presents Echo with an ultimatum: if she lives with him for one year, he will ensure her father makes it home safely. But there is more to the wolf than Echo realizes. In his enchanted house beneath a mountain, each room must be sewn together to keep the home from unraveling, and something new and dark and strange lies behind every door. When centuries-old secrets unfold, Echo discovers a magical library full of books- turned-mirrors, and a young man named Hal who is trapped inside of them. As the year ticks by, the rooms begin to disappear and Echo must solve the mystery of the wolf's enchantment before her time is up; otherwise Echo, the wolf, and Hal will be lost forever. More »

Seventeen-year-old Nedra Brysstain leaves her home in the rural, northern territories of Lunar Island to attend the prestigious Yugen Academy with only one goal in mind: master the trade of medicinal alchemy. A scholarship student matriculating with the children of Lunar Island's wealthiest and most powerful families, Nedra doesn't quite fit in with the other kids at Yugen. Until she meets Greggori "Grey" Astor. Grey is immediately taken by the brilliant and stubborn Nedra, who he notices is especially invested in her studies. And that's for a good reason: a deadly plague has been sweeping through the north, and it's making its way toward the cities. With her family's life—and the lives of all of Lunar Island's citizens—on the line, Nedra is determined to find a cure for the plague. Grey and Nedra grow close, but as the sickness spreads and the body count rises, Nedra becomes desperate to find a cure. Soon she finds herself diving into alchemy's most dangerous corners. And when she turns to the most forbidden practice of all, necromancy, even Grey might not be able to pull her from the darkness. More »

7pm | PHOENIX | FIRST DRAFT BOOK CLUB | BECOMING | Join us at First Draft Book Bar (the wine and beer bar inside Changing Hands Phoenix) for a discussion of this month's pick, Becoming by Michelle Obama, an intimate and powerful memoir by the former First Lady of the United States. In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America—the first African American to serve in that role—she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare. In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world's most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whose story inspires us to do the same. Becoming for 20% off, then meet us and Arizona Republic reporter Barbara VanDenburgh at First Draft Book Bar at 7pm to discuss and enjoy happy hour prices during the event. More »

7pm | TEMPE | TEEN EVENT | ROSHANI CHOKSHI | THE GILDED WOLVES | The New York Times bestselling author of The Star-Touched Queen and A Crown of Wishes presents her latest, a novel set in Paris during a time of extraordinary change—one that is full of mystery, decadence, and dangerous desires. It's 1889. The city is on the cusp of industry and power, and the Exposition Universelle has breathed new life into the streets and dredged up ancient secrets. Here, no one keeps tabs on dark truths better than treasure-hunter and wealthy hotelier Séverin Montagnet-Alarie. When the elite, ever-powerful Order of Babel coerces him to help them on a mission, Séverin is offered a treasure that he never imagined: his true inheritance. To hunt down the ancient artifact the Order seeks, Séverin calls upon a band of unlikely experts: An engineer with a debt to pay. A historian banished from his home. A dancer with a sinister past. And a brother in arms if not blood. Together, they will join Séverin as he explores the dark, glittering heart of Paris. What they find might change the course of history--but only if they can stay alive. More »

The Dreamers: A Novel

by Karen Thompson Walker | Hardcover, $27.00 »

The Dreamers Eerie and atmospheric, Karen Thompson Walker's follow-up to The Age of Miracles does not disappoint. The Dreamers investigates the strange 'deaths' in a college town of people who succumb to an inexplicable fatigue, fall asleep and become locked in life-altering dreams never to wake. The first half of the book looks at the lives lost and the epidemic itself. But it's the second half of the novel that really turns the story on its head when Walker looks at the dreams themselves. It's mystical, hypnotic and thought-provoking and reminded me of Don DeLillo's White Noise and Emily Mandel's Station Eleven. Read this mesmerizing book!  —Michelle
