Dave Clark: Phoenix Beer: A History Rising to New Peaks
PHOENIX | 7PM THURSDAY, JANUARY 9
An interactive beer sampling and deep dive into the local brewing scene of Phoenix! Dave Clark, author of Phoenix Beer: A History Rising to New Peaks, will lead you on a beer-inspired journey to discuss many of your favorite local breweries, how they came to be and the story of the people behind those breweries.
One special local brewery's beers will be featured and we'll sample and discuss this fine brewery's beers.
Phoenix's brewing history dates back to the mid-1800s, when small breweries had to contend with brackish water, searing desert heat and no refrigeration. By the time Prohibition arrived, the state's breweries were tapped out. It wasn't until the 1930s that Arizona Brewing Company left the first indelible mark on the Copper State's thirst. When its last call came, a new force called Four Peaks rose from the ashes as majestically as the mountains for which it is named. Author Dave Clark guides you from the area's beer icons of yesterday to the rapidly evolving brewing scene of today. Discover and appreciate Phoenix beer, from the classic, clean pilsner from Helton Brewing that rivals Germany's best to Fate's local taste of the Southwest, Hatch Chile Gatos. More »

Abigail Johnson: Every Other Weekend
TEMPE | 7PM THURSDAY, JANUARY 9
The local author discusses her latest novel with YA author Suzanne Young.
Adam Moynihan's life used to be awesome. Straight As, close friends and a home life so perfect that it could have been a TV show straight out of the 50s. Then his oldest brother died. Now his fun-loving mom cries constantly, he and his remaining brother can't talk without fighting, and the father he always admired proved himself a coward by moving out when they needed him most.
Jolene Timber's life is nothing like the movies she loves--not the happy ones anyway. As an aspiring director, she should know, because she's been reimagining her life as a film ever since she was a kid. With her divorced parents at each other's throats and using her as a pawn, no amount of mental reediting will give her the love she's starving for.
Forced to spend every other weekend in the same apartment building, the boy who thinks forgiveness makes him weak and the girl who thinks love is for fools begin an unlikely friendship. The weekends he dreaded and she endured soon become the best part of their lives. But when one's life begins to mend while the other's spirals out of control, they realize that falling in love while surrounded by its demise means nothing is ever guaranteed. More »

Joanna Ruth Meyer (Beyond the Shadowed Earth) and Charlie Holmberg (The Will and the Wilds)
TEMPE | 7PM TUESDAY, JANUARY 14
YA authors Joanna Ruth Meyer and Charlie Holmberg visit Tempe to celebrate the release of their latest novels.
About Beyond the Shadowed Earth:
It has always been Eda’s dream to become empress, no matter the cost. Haunted by her ambition and selfishness, she’s convinced that the only way to achieve her goal is to barter with the gods. But all requests come with a price and Eda bargains away the soul of her best friend in exchange for the crown.
Years later, her hold on the empire begins to crumble and her best friend unexpectedly grows sick and dies. Gnawed by guilt and betrayal, Eda embarks on a harrowing journey to confront the very god who gave her the kingdom in the first place. However, she soon discovers that he’s trapped at the center of an otherworldly labyrinth and that her bargain with him is more complex than she ever could have imagined.
Set in the same universe as Joanna’s debut, Beneath the Haunting Sea, Beyond the Shadowed Earth combines her incredible world building and lush prose with a new, villainous lead.
About The Will and the Wilds:
A spellbinding story of truce and trickery from the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Paper Magician series.
Enna knows to fear the mystings that roam the wildwood near her home. When one tries to kill her to obtain an enchanted stone, Enna takes a huge risk: fighting back with a mysting of her own.
Maekallus's help isn't free. His price? A kiss. One with the power to steal her soul. But their deal leaves Maekallus bound to the mortal realm, which begins eating him alive. Only Enna's kiss, given willingly, can save him from immediate destruction. It's a temporary salvation for Maekallus and a lingering doom for Enna. Part of her soul now burns bright inside Maekallus, making him feel for the first time.
Enna shares Maekallus's suffering, but her small sacrifice won't last long. If she and Maekallus can't break the spell binding him to the mortal realm, Maekallus will be consumed completely--and Enna's soul with him.

The Frolic of the Beasts
by Yukio Mishima | Paperback, $15.00 »
“A bizarre love triangle that culminates in a tragedy of Greek proportions in Post-War Japan. The story rivals Dostoevsky in its highly psychological rendering of the three primary characters, while still coming in at about a third of the size of a Russian classic, written in the highly economic and eloquently beautiful prose typical of 20th century Japanese literature.” —Salvatore
