Luis Alberto Urrea: The House of Broken Angels

PHOENIX | 7PM MONDAY, MARCH 12

author photo
book cover
Luis Alberto Urrea, author of Pulitzer Prize finalist The Devil's Highway, shares his latest, an indelible portrait of a complex family that reminds us of what it means to be the first generation and to live two lives across one border.

In his final days, beloved and ailing patriarch Miguel Angel De La Cruz, known affectionately as Big Angel, has summoned his entire clan for one last legendary birthday party. But as the party approaches, his mother, nearly one hundred years old, dies herself, leading to a farewell doubleheader. Across one bittersweet weekend in their San Diego neighborhood, the revelers mingle among the palm trees and cacti, celebrating the lives of Big Angel and his mother, and recounting the many tales that have passed into family lore, the acts both ordinary and heroic that brought them to a fraught and sublime country and allowed them to flourish in the land they have come to call home. Mukasonga immerses us in a school for young girls, called "Notre-Dame du Nil." The girls are sent to this high school perched on the ridge of the Nile in order to become the feminine elite of the country and to escape the dangers of the outside world. The book is a prelude to the Rwandan genocide and unfolds behind the closed doors of the school, in the interminable rainy season. Friendships, desires, hatred, political fights, incitement to racial violence, persecutions... The school soon becomes a fascinating existential microcosm of the true 1970s Rwanda. More »

Asymmetry

by Lisa Halliday | Hardcover, $26.00 »

Asymmetry A powerful debut novel told from three distinct perspectives: the first chronicles the unexpected romance between a young, aspiring editor and a famous, much older writer; the second is the story of Amar, an Iraqi-American detained at Heathrow while en route to see his brother in Kurdistan; and the third deftly binds all the characters together. The stories oscillate between funny and sad but most importantly, are deeply humane. Without a doubt this slim novel packs a punch - the tight prose and singular narrative structure draws you in and raises questions of how power and privilege impact love and war and the insidious ways it effects our everyday.  —Michelle
