Heidi Ganahl: SheFactor

PHOENIX | 7PM FRIDAY, JUNE 21

AUTHOR PHOTO
Join us for a talk, Q&A and booksigning with the founder and CEO of the SheFactor.

SheFactor is a book and app that helps young women find their passion, focus on goals, and achieve balance in their personal and professional lives. The book outlines a letter to any woman’s younger self, showing that every path is unique and there is no “right” way to achieve your own form of success. Ganahl doesn’t tell us what to do—she gives a microphone to the inner voice that already knows what to do. The encouragement in the book corresponds to the more tactical accountability that is game-ified in the SheFactor companion app, which readers can use to track each factor in her own life, or locate a mentor or group of friends to help keep her accountable to her new, balanced life goals. David Crow: The Pale-Faced Lie

PHOENIX | 7PM TUESDAY, JUNE 25

AUTHOR PHOTO
David Crow shares his new memoir.

Growing up on the Navajo reservation, David Crow and his siblings idolized their dad. Tall, strong, smart, and brave, the self-taught Cherokee regaled his family with stories of his World War II feats. But as time passed, David discovered the other side of Thurston Crow, the ex-con with his own code of ethics that justified cruelty, violence, lies—even murder.

A shrewd con artist with a genius IQ, Thurston intimidated David with beatings to coerce him into doing his criminal bidding. David's mom, too mentally ill to care for her children, couldn't protect him. One day, Thurston packed up the house and took the kids, leaving her nothing. Soon he remarried, and David learned that his stepmother was just as vicious and abusive as his father.

Through sheer determination, and with the help of a few angels along the way, David managed to get into college and achieve professional success. When he finally found the courage to stop helping his father with his criminal activities, he unwittingly triggered a plot of revenge that would force him into a showdown with Thurston Crow.

With lives at stake, including his own, David would have only twenty-four hours to outsmart his father--the brilliant, psychotic man who bragged that the three years he spent in the notorious San Quentin State Prison had been the easiest time of his life.

The Pale-Faced Lie is a searing, raw, palpable memoir that reminds us what an important role our parents play in our lives. Most of all, it's an inspirational story about the power of forgiveness and the ability of the human spirit to rise above adversity, no matter the cost. More »

7pm | PHOENIX | FIRST DRAFT BOOK CLUB | DISAPPEARING EARTH | Join us at First Draft Book Bar (the wine and beer bar inside Changing Hands Phoenix) for a discussion of this month's pick, Disappearing Earth by Julia Phillips. One August afternoon, on the shoreline of the Kamchatka peninsula at the northeastern edge of Russia, two girls—sisters, eight and eleven—go missing. Echoes of the disappearance reverberate across a tightly woven community, with the fear and loss felt most deeply among its women. Taking us through a year in Kamchatka, Disappearing Earth enters with astonishing emotional acuity the worlds of a cast of richly drawn characters, all connected by the crime: a witness, a neighbor, a detective, a mother. We are transported to vistas of rugged beauty—densely wooded forests, open expanses of tundra, soaring volcanoes, and the glassy seas that border Japan and Alaska—and into a region as complex as it is alluring, where social and ethnic tensions have long simmered, and where outsiders are often the first to be accused. In a story as propulsive as it is emotionally engaging, and through a young writer's virtuosic feat of empathy and imagination, this powerful novel brings us to a new understanding of the intricate bonds of family and community, in a Russia unlike any we have seen before. Stop by either Changing Hands location or order online to get your copy of Disappearing Earth for 20% off, then meet us and Arizona Republic reporter Barbara VanDenburgh at First Draft Book Bar at 7pm to discuss and enjoy happy hour prices during the event. On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous

by Ocean Vuong | Hardcover, $26.00 »

Magic for Liars Ocean Vuong's debut novel is as stunning and beautiful as his poetry collections. Written as a love letter to his mother, Little Dog, the narrator, documents his mother's journey from Vietnam during the war to their immigration to America and the trauma that comes afterwards: the adjustment of life in a new country, life with a parent shattered by war, and Little Dog's own becoming as a gay Vietnamese-American man. This is not a novel for the faint of heart: it is delicate, and it is raw and dark and full of terrors. But my god is it gorgeous. I was left in awe and in gratitude after reading this book. On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous has my heart.  —Michelle
