Changing Hands Bookstore and R. Pela Contemporary Art gallery host a reception celebrating local artist and store friend Safwat Saleem's show "Concerned but Powerless."

Safwat Saleem: "Concerned but Powerless" offers the artist's satirical artwork about adversity that combines several media to create multimedia storytelling experiences. "Using humor as one of the key ingredients allows me to design works that are approachable," Saleem says. "The levity is a crucial starting point for discussions about issues of race, identity, religion and stereotypes – topics that are important to me as a Pakistani-American." More »

R. Pela Contemporary Art is a curatorial project that presents exhibitions by local artists in galleries throughout Arizona.

Tommy Orange writes of the plight of the urban Native American, the Native American in the city, in a stunning novel that grapples with a complex and painful history, with an inheritance of beauty and profound spirituality, and with a plague of addiction, abuse, and suicide. An unforgettable debut, destined to become required reading in schools and universities across the country. Stop by either Changing Hands location or order online to get your copy of There There for 20% off, then meet us and Arizona Republic reporter Barbara VanDenburgh at First Draft Book Bar at 7pm to discuss and enjoy happy hour prices during the event. The one thing that could save them might also be the very thing that pushes their marriage beyond the point of repair. Shoes That Fit

Shoes That Fit

Gayle
My two wonderful cousins, Zach and Nancy Brooks, have started a program to buy a new pair of shoes for every kid that needs them in a school near their worm farm. It is a disadvantaged area (almost all the kids qualify for free lunches, which is how the charity determines need). It's a terrific program. On the first day of school, the teachers measure the kids' feet and order new shoes. The charity orders the shoes (name brands like Reebok, Adidas, etc) and every kid gets a new pair. As I'm sure you can imagine, a new pair of shoes for a kid (especially for a new school year) is pretty special. If you'd like to help a child start school with new shoes on her feet, please click on the link and buy a pair. I just did!!

From the Corner of the Oval: A Memoir

by Beck Dorey Stein | Hardcover, $28.00 »

My Year of Rest and Relaxation I picked up this book because of the interesting perspective of a presidency, but I enjoyed this book because of the author's addictive personality and whirlwind adventures. Beck Dorey-Stein was a stenographer for Barack Obama and followed him for five years throughout the world. She gives readers a rare look at the life of a White House staffer with hilarious stories and relatable events. The story feels like you are reading about a friend!  —Amanda
