Pierce Brown: Dark Age

MESA ARTS CENTER | 7PM THURSDAY, AUGUST 1

Book Cover PHOTO AUTHOR PHOTO
An evening with #1 New York Times bestseller Pierce Brown, author of the Red Rising saga, to celebrate the release of the next installment, Dark Age.

For a decade Darrow led a revolution against the corrupt color-coded Society. Now, outlawed by the very Republic he founded, he wages a rogue war on Mercury in hopes that he can still salvage the dream of Eo. But as he leaves death and destruction in his wake, is he still the hero who broke the chains? Or will another legend rise to take his place?

Lysander au Lune, the heir in exile, has returned to the Core. Determined to bring peace back to mankind at the edge of his sword, he must overcome or unite the treacherous Gold families of the Core and face down Darrow over the skies of war-torn Mercury.

But theirs are not the only fates hanging in the balance.

On Luna, Mustang, Sovereign of the Republic, campaigns to unite the Republic behind her husband. Beset by political and criminal enemies, can she outwit her opponents in time to save him?

Once a Red refugee, young Lyria now stands accused of treason, and her only hope is a desperate escape with unlikely new allies.

Abducted by a new threat to the Republic, Pax and Electra, the children of Darrow and Sevro, must trust in Ephraim, a thief, for their salvation—and Ephraim must look to them for his chance at redemption.

As alliances shift, break, and re-form—and power is seized, lost, and reclaimed—every player is at risk in a game of conquest that could turn the Rising into a new Dark Age. More »

Gilly Segal and Kimberly Jones: I'm Not Dying with You Tonight

TEMPE | 7PM FRIDAY, AUGUST 9

Book Cover PHOTO AUTHOR PHOTO
The YA authors discuss their new novel in Tempe.

Lena and Campbell aren't friends.

Lena has her killer style, her awesome boyfriend, and a plan. She knows she's going to make it big. Campbell, on the other hand, is just trying to keep her head down and get through the year at her new school.

When both girls attend the Friday-night football game, what neither expects is for everything to descend into sudden mass chaos. Chaos born from violence and hate. Chaos that unexpectedly throws them together.

They aren't friends. They hardly understand the other's point of view. But none of that matters when the city is up in flames, and they only have each other to rely on if they're going to survive the night. More »

Additional Praise for I'm Not Dying with You Tonight:
"A vital addition to the YA race relations canon."--Nic Stone, New York Times bestselling author of Dear Martin
"An astounding achievement. This novel is an incendiary experience, one that does not shy away from difficult questions about privilege and violence. But Jones and Segal don't hold our hands to provide us easy answers; this is a book meant to be devoured in a single sitting and discussed for years to come."--Mark Oshiro, author of Anger is a Gift
"I'm Not Dying With You Tonight is a powerful examination of privilege, and how friends are often found in surprising places. Jones and Segal have penned a page-turning debut, as timely as it is addictive."--David Arnold, New York Times bestselling author of Mosquitoland and Kids of Appetite

7pm | PHOENIX | FAYE HAMILTON | RESCUE 12 RESPONDING |
Hamilton discusses and signs her independently published debut novel. From the publisher: "David and Jonathan are paramedics who deal with life and death and the consequences of human choice . On Rescue 12, they respond to the tragic drug overdose of a group of teenagers at a high school party. One girl survives to tell what she witnessed during her near-death experience. This encounter results in the spiritual awakening of David and forces Jonathan to confront his own Christian faith, which he abandoned when he came out to his father. What happens when the ambulance arrives? What happens when a patient dies? Why does God allow for sin, death, and suffering? What's the point of trying? These questions are answered, the emergency rescue calls are shared, and the lives of the two paramedics are forever changed by the spiritual warfare they encounter." More »

Deputy Pima County Attorney Rick Unklesbay presents his book, Arbitrary Death. In a career spanning four decades, Unklesbay tried over one hundred murder cases that ended with sixteen men and women receiving the death sentence. His book offers an insider's view from someone who has spent decades prosecuting murder cases and who now argues that the death penalty doesn't work and that our system is fundamentally flawed. Arbitrary Death is for anyone who wonders why and when its government seeks to legally take the life of one of its citizens—and may have you questioning whether you can support a system that applies death as an arbitrary punishment, often decades after the sentence was given. American Predator: The Hunt for the Most Meticulous Serial Killer of the 21st Century

by Maureen Callahan | Hardcover, $27.00 »

American Predator American Predator is one of those books that will keep you up all night, either in horror, shock, curiosity, or all of the above. It's the story of Israel Keyes, a serial killer operating as recently as 2012. I like to think I have my thumb pretty well set on the vein of true crime, but I hadn't heard of Keyes until I happened upon a podcast about his story. He largely managed to fly under the radar until being linked to a killing in Alaska and subsequently being caught in Texas. I found myself sucked in by Callahan's writing, staying up late into the night to read about Keyes' misdoings. American Predator is a book that's sure to chill you to the bone, and perhaps will leave you wondering just how many other Israel Keyes we have in our midst.  —Heather H.
