PHOENIX | 7PM WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8

This month we'll discuss By Night the Mountain Burns by Juan Tomás Ávila Laurel.

This novel tells of childhood on a remote island off the west African coast. Superstition dominates in dark times and the hard-pressed islanders sacrifice their possessions to the enraged ocean. What of their lives will they save?

Both lyrical and unsparingly truthful, this novel draws on oral storytelling to illuminate a little-known corner of Africa.

Juan Tomás Ávila Laurel was born in 1966 in Equatorial Guinea. By Night the Mountain Burns is based on his memories of growing up on the remote Annobon Island. He made headlines in 2011 by embarking on a hunger strike in an anti-government protest. More »

Being born during a hurricane is unlucky, and twelve-year-old Caroline has had her share of bad luck lately. She's hated and bullied by everyone in her small school on St. Thomas of the US Virgin Islands, a spirit only she can see won't stop following her, and worst of all, Caroline's mother left home one day and never came back. But when a new student named Kalinda arrives, Caroline's luck begins to turn around. Kalinda, a solemn girl from Barbados with a special smile for everyone, becomes Caroline's first and only friend—and the person for whom Caroline has begun to develop a crush. Now Caroline must find the strength to confront her feelings for Kalinda, brave the spirit stalking her through the islands, and face the reason her mother abandoned her. Together, Caroline and Kalinda must set out in a hurricane to find Caroline's missing mother—before Caroline loses her forever. Shoes That Fit

Shoes That Fit

Gayle
My two wonderful cousins, Zach and Nancy Brooks, have started a program to buy a new pair of shoes for every kid that needs them in a school near their worm farm. It is a disadvantaged area (almost all the kids qualify for free lunches, which is how the charity determines need). It's a terrific program. On the first day of school, the teachers measure the kids' feet and order new shoes. The charity orders the shoes (name brands like Reebok, Adidas, etc) and every kid gets a new pair. As I'm sure you can imagine, a new pair of shoes for a kid (especially for a new school year) is pretty special. If you'd like to help a child start school with new shoes on her feet, please click on the link and buy a pair. I just did!!

The Incendiaries

by R. O. Kwon | Hardcover, $26.00 »

Fruit of the Drunken Tree If you're looking for a short page count that packs a lot of emotional weight, this book is for you. Kwon was inspired to write this book while dealing with her disillusionment in religion and balancing her identity of being Korean-born but raised in America. Chapters are short (sometimes only half a page) and told creatively through three characters: two college students and a cult leader who seduces one of them. Think of it as a less twisty Fight Club, but with still a lot to think about after you finish the last page.  —Adam
